"First (Wrong) Impressions" is Krista D. Ball's update on Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice". In this scene, Lizzy, her sister Caroline, and two men, Charles and Darcy, are at a dinner. Earlier, Lizzy and Darcy had a misunderstanding. :D

Soon, even Caroline noticed something was up. "Darcy," she said, "you're so quiet this evening.. Are you bored?"
"Not at all. Just thinking." He smiled at her, but flicked a look at Lizzy long enough to catch her eye.
"About what?" Charles asked.
"I was thinking how even the plainest woman built for manual labor can be made rather lovely by expressive eyes."
Charles choked on his beer.
Lizzy tried to contain her grin; she guessed that was his pathetic way of apologizing. Then again, maybe he was trying to goad her into admitting she'd eavesdropped, thereby forcing her to apologize for listening to a conversation never meant for her ears.

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you overheard something you shouldn't have? How did you react?

This weekend I got to meet SF/F author Tanya Huff and have books signed by her so I thought I'd share a quote by her. This is from Blood Pact, book four in the Blood books. Vicki, a human woman, is involved with both a human man, Mike, and a male vampire, Henry.

This week's quotes are from "Bitten" by Kelley Armstrong; it's the first book in her Women of the Otherworld series. It's been made into a TV series and tonight is the US premiere. It premiered in Canada on Saturday night. I am nervous and excited to watch it; I already have issues with the casting and some story line changes they announced, but I will watch and see. Anyway, I thought I'd celebrate by sharing quotes from the book. Enjoy!

I finally finished up the WVMP Radio series by Jeri-Smith Ready, barely finishing it before midnight on the 31st. (I was trying to finish the series by the end of 2013.) The whole series has good quotes. This one gives nothing away while giving a glimpse of main couple, Ciara and Shane, and some of the secondary characters. This scene takes place at the radio station where they all work.

"Shane, can I bring my laptop into the studio tonight and hang out with you?"
"Sure." He sets down the pistol and gives me a smile. "You know you're welcome anytime."
"I also know it's crowded in there with two people, and sometimes I distract you."
He takes a step forward, bringing his body close and sliding his fingers between mine. "I like when you distract me."
"Get a room!" Franklin, yells from his office. "And I don't mean the studio. We could hear you guys the last time."
Shane looks toward Franklin. "Did I leave the mic on?"
"Yes," say Jeremy, David, and Franklin in unison. Then Franklin adds, "I can't wait until you're a boring old married couple like Lori and David."
"Hey," David says. "We're not old."

I like this series a lot - unusual take on vamps, humor, good characterization, fast pace, and good blend of action and story. If you like vampires, give it a try, but read in order! You'll be less confused and won't accidentally spoil the story.

Reading "Clean Sweep" by Ilona Andrews made me want to re-read the Keeper series by Tanya Huff. I might get to it over the break but in the meantime, I've been poking through the first book, "Summon the Keeper". It was hard to pick just one quote, there are so many good ones. Claire is a supernatural, a Keeper, whose job it is to keep order and fight evil, and Dean is the handyman and chef at the inn Claire owns; he's just found out about the supernatural world and is still adjusting.

I'm reading Ilona Andrews' new book, "Clean Sweep", and it has some excellent quotes in it. It's the first book in a new series and so far quite good. I picked several quotes. Dina is an innkeeper and Ryan a werewolf; they don't hit off too well to start with.

I turned and walked back to my bedroom, the balcony door closing softly behind me. Obnoxious smart-ass. Never been anywhere, never done anything, huh. Arrested development, huh. Considering that it was coming from a man who spent his nights peeing on his neighbors' fences, that was rich. Shoot, I should've told him that. Oh well, too late now.

*****************************
I've never before understood the true meaning of "handsome devil". I knew logically what it meant, but now I saw it in action. Sean was a handsome devil in the flesh: arrogant, dangerous, and hot. I knew he was bad for me, but I had this absurd pull to reach out and touch his face. If he weren't so happy with himself, I might have even considered it.
*****************************
Caldenia descended down the stairs and saw him. "Ooo, Planning a kinky morning?"
"No, just dealing with a pesky intruder."
"Oh well. If you kill him, do save me his liver. Werewolf liver is a very tender delicacy." She licked her lips. "Especially when sauteed in butter."
"What the hell...?" Sean growled.
"I'll keep that in mind."
*****************************
Usually they roared their house name at the top of their lungs, trying to intimidate...Oh. They were trying to be inconspicuous. I bit my lip to keep from laughing I'd never had an attempt at intimidation whispered at me before.

If you like urban fantasy mixed with sci fi and humor, give this a shot. It's good. My review will be up on Saturday.

Today's quote is from "Curtsies & Conspiracies" by Gail Carriger, part of her Finishing School series which is a spin-off of her Parasol Protectorate series. Snark, etiquette, espionage, and supernatural creatures - lots of good fun.

"We are training to handle such things for the rest of our lives. You are training to be evil geniuses. Table settings and the likeare regarded, I am sure, as beneath you."

"You are disposed to see this as careless?" wondered Pillover.

"Some things are more important than they seem. Note, for example, that by having larger flowers in taller vases, you can prevent people from conversing across the table, thus confining them to their dinner partners. Wider arrangements with cascading ferns, and you might even pass notes or objects to a dining companion without anyone the wiser."

***************************************************

The girls, all forty-five of them, trooped down to a lower deck. They had their weekly lesson with Captain Niall. There was a palpable waft of excitement, not to mention perfume, as the werewolf was most every young lady's favorite teacher. He was also, by far, the handsomest.

Sophronia liked him, too, even though she knew the floppy, easygoing military man was a sham. In his werewolf guise, he'd tried to kill her and savaged her best horsehair petticoat instead. He'd been moon-mad at the time, but she'd never quite forgiven the lapse, nor the loss of the petticoat. Like a proper gentleman, the good captain never made mention of the undergarment murder.

***************************************************
Sidheag was going to make Agatha say it out loud. The red-head whispered, "No, what's a man like down there?"
"Oh." Sidheag wrinkled her nose. "Unimpressive. They have"--she gestured toward her own nether regions with one hand--a sort of dangly sausage-lacks tailoring."

Sophronia blinked in surprise. That sounded worse than Sidheag's description of a werewolf shift. She hadn't seen any of the sooties that close up. "Really?"

"Yes, like it wasn't fitted into it's casing properly. And hairy. "Sidheag was enjoying shocking them.

This week's quote is from the fabulous Kelley Armstrong. "Hidden" is a novella set in her Women of the Otherworld series. In this scene, Clay, his mate Elena and their kids, Kate and Logan, are talking about Clay's school days. Clay wasn't the best student. :D

"Isn't that the one Dad got kicked out of?"
Clay choked on a s'more.
"Where did you hear that?" I asked.
"Uncle Nick. He was talking to Reese. He said Daddy got kicked out of kindergarten."
"For cutting up the guinea pig!" Kate said, giggling from Clay's lap.
"Dissecting." Logan gave her a stern look. "That's different. It was already dead."
Clay put his arm around Logan's shoulders. "Exactly what I said."

I admit, it took a while for Clay to grow on me but this story always makes me chuckle.

If you love PNR, you ought to be reading D.B. Reynolds. Her Vampires in America series is hot and smart. This quote is from the novella, "Betrayed: A Cyn & Rafael Novella", book #5.5 in the series. This scene occurs after there was an assassination attempt on Rafael, a Vampire lord and not someone you should mess with. Cyn is his mate and a private investigator; she takes his security very seriously.

Cyn scowled. This was not what she wanted to hear. On the other hand..."Okay, but housewives aren't exactly hiring themselves out as assassins. So who is?"

"Ah, that does change it. Okay, maybe a double handful outside the military or sanctioned government squads, although some of those guys have been known to work on the side, too."

"If I wanted to hire someone like that, where would I look?"

"Leighton."

"Murphy," she mimicked impatiently.

He sighed. "Dammit, all right. But there's not exactly a snipers-r-us store, you know. Something like this would be word of mouth, not even a damn classified ad in the back of a magazine. You'd have to know the middle man, and he'd have to trust you well enough to put out feelers."

Cyn paused, trying to decide if there was anything between the lines of what Colin was saying. "Would something like that be localized? I mean, do snipers have territories?"

"No, Leighton," he said with forced patience. "We have airplanes now. I'm sure you've heard of them."

Have you read any D.B. Reynolds? What did you think?

"Bedlam's Bard" by Mercedes Lackey and Ellen Guon is an oldie but a goodie. A pair of humans, Eric and Beth, become involved with elves and one elf in particular, Korendil. This was actually the first menage I ever read but the story is not primarily a romance; it's an urban fantasy with elves and other fairy tale creatures.

Before he could get a single word past the hard lump choking his voice, Korendil (wearing nothing more than a towel draped negligently around his waist) strolled in through the other door---
The one leading to the bedroom.
The elf's long blond hair hung in damp, dripping ringlets, and there were beads of water on his shoulder.
Looks like he's sure made a full recovery.
Kory didn't seem aware of Eric's presence at all; he moved easily, gracefully, showing no sign of any of his injuries, and no hint of lingering weakness.

"Beth"---Kory made a caress out of the word, and leaned over, embracing her, to give her a very warm, very sensuous kiss. His mane of hair hid their faces, but Eric had no doubt that she was enjoying it. She had both her arms around him, returning the embrace---oblivious to Eric still standing there.

Like I don't mean a thing to her.

This was one of the first urban fantasies that I read and I fell in love with it. What was your first urban fantasy story? Did you love it?

I have become a huge fan of Jessica Scott's romances; they're tender, funny, gut-wrenching, and realistic. This one was especially wrenching; it's due out next week and my review will be up later this week. This quote is funny, tender and sad (sadder in context) and it's one of my favorites. Carponti is in the hospital and under doctor's orders not to engage in physical activities, including sex.

"Can I help you?" The nurse's voice was scratchy over the speaker.
"Yeah, I need a note from the doctor so I can have sex with my wife."
"Vic!" She tried to snatch the handset.
"Um, I'm sorry, sir. Can you repeat that?"
"Sorry, ma'am," Nicole grabbed the button. "Ignore him. He's high. We're sorry, ma'am."

This week's quote is from one of my favorite authors, Patricia Briggs. I love her books and her Mercy Thompson series is one of my favorites. Choosing one was hard, there are so many good ones. This is from Moon Called, the first of the Mercy Thompson books. Warren is one of my favorite wolves and here we find out how he joined the local werewolf pack.

It was I who introduced Adam and Warren, about the time Adam moved in behind me. I'd had Warren to dinner and we'd been laughing about something, I forget what, and one of Adam's wolves howled. I'll never forget the desolation on Warren's face.

I'd hear it all the time when I was growing up-wolves are meant to run in a pack. I still don't understand it completely myself, but Warren's face taught me that being alone was no trivial thing for a wolf.

The next morning, I'd knocked on Adam's front door. He listened to me politely and took the piece of paper with warren's phone number on it. I'd left his house knowing I'd failed.

It was Warren who told me what happened next. Adam summoned Warren to his house and interrogated him for two hours. At the end of it, Adam told Warren he didn't care if a wolf wanted to screw ducks as long as he'd listen to orders. Not actually in those words, if Warren's grin as he told me about it was an accurate measure. Adam uses crudeness as he uses all of his weapons: seldom, but with great effect.

I love this passage; it says great things about both Mercy and Adam.

Over 20 years ago, I found a book at the library that became one of my favorites and I bought it the first chance I got and I bought the subsequent books. "Pigs Don't Fly", the second book in the series by Mary Brown was a different sort of epic fantasy. Oh, there was a quest, but the questee, Summer, was a young peasant woman forced out of her home after her mother, the village whore, dies. She sets off to find a new home and long the way collects a blind knight and various animals. Thanks to a ring made from a unicorn horn that belonged to her late father, she's able to understand the animals and communicate with them after a fashion. Growch the dog is still one of my favorites; Oberon in Kevin Hearne's Iron Druid series reminds me a lot of Growch. Along the way, Summer grows, matures, and becomes much more competent than she ever dreamed. In fact, her dreams change along the way. This scene is near the end and she's trying to convince Jasper, a dragon who can change into human form, to stay with her.

"Don't! Please don't leave me...."

"I must, girl. From now on our paths lie in different directions. Go back to Matthew, who will love and care for you, take the dragon gold to a big city and find a man you fancy, travel to--"

"I want you," I said. "Kiss me, please...." and I reached up and pulled his head down to mine, my hand cupped around his head. Suddenly he responded, he pulled me close, as close as a second skin, and his mouth came down on mine. It was a fierce, hot, possessive kiss that had my whole being fused into his and my body melting like sun-kissed ice into his warmth.

This series is one of my favorites; I think I feel a re-read coming on.Do you have any series that stick with you years later?

This week's quote is from "The Stranger You Know", the third book in Andrea Kane's Forensic Instincts series. Forensic Instincts is a private investigative firm and they are working on a case. In this scene, one of the members is reaching out for help. There's nothing between Marc and Ryan, they are both straight and seeing women but this scene made me laugh. Since the book is generally grim, I appreciated the break. This scene occurs at their place of employment.

He glanced at his watch-1:30AM. He wasn't discouraged. He knew Marc would still be awake and working.

Sure enough, when he went upstairs, he found Marc cross-checking the employee background searches Ryan had done on the Auburn Correctional Facility staff.

"Anything?" Ryan asked.

"Nope, not yet." Marc stretched. "I need a break."

"Good. Because I need a date."

Marc's eyebrows rose in amusement. "Do I get a corsage?"

"You get to play a video surveillance game with me, from setup to stakeout. Interested?"

"Sure." Marc rose, looking down at his T-shirt and jeans. "At least I don't have to change my clothes. I hate playing dress-up."

"Just bring refreshments," Ryan advised. "We're going to get bored, cramped and hungry. But I'm hoping it will pay off."

"Lead the way."

This week's quotes are from "New York to Dallas" by J.D. Robb. It's part of her In Death series which I love. I borrowed this one from my library. I love this series so you're sure to see more quotes from the books! :D In the first quote, Peabody is nervous about publicly being awarded a medal and then her parents arrive. The second quote is from right after the ceremony.

"Don't, don't. You'll make me cry, and I'm not allowed to. Under orders."

"So we heard." Tossing back her long, dark hair Phoebe stepped over, gave Eve a hug and a kiss on the check. The quick laugh said she knew the display of affection embarrassed Eve. "You look formidable in uniform. And sexy. Doesn't she, Sam?"

"She does."

She got another hug and kiss, right in her own bullpen. Free-Agers, she thought, they just had to spread the love.

**********************************************

The milling began-shoulder slaps, handshakes. She caught the glint in Peabody's eye, and fired one back.

"No hugging. Cops don't hug."

Peabody tracked her gaze to Strong, currently being hugged by another cop.

"She sustained injuries."

"Okay, but in my mind you're getting a giant hug and a big, sloppy kiss."

"Keep it in your head or you'll sustain injuries."

Lol, Eve just doesn't handle emotion well but I'd want her on my case if something happened to me.

This week's quote is from "Loyalty In Death" by JD Robb, part of her series, In Death. I love this series so much. Two of the secondary characters, Peabody and McNab, cops like the main character Eve, are involved. They're having makeup sex in this scene.

They'd finally made it to the bed. Peabody wasn't altogether sure how they'd managed to get from the elevator to his apartment to his bed without killing each other, but that's where they were. The sheets were hot and tangled, and even now when McNab rolled weakly off her, her body pumped heat like a furnace.

"I'm not done yet," he said in the dark with a voice that hitched.

Peabody snorted, then began to laugh like a loon. "Me, neither. What are we, crazy?"

"A couple of more times, we'll be dead."

Have you ever read the In Death books? What do you think?

I read an ARC over the weekend that I really liked; I'll post the review next month. Since it IS an ARC, the material is not final and could change between now and the final version. "Cursed" by S.J. Harper is the first in a new UF series that features two FBI agents who happen to be supernatural beings, and they get involved.

He reaches out with one hand, brushing his fingertips down the side of my neck before tracing a painstakingly slow path along the edge of  my gown's neckline - starting in front of my shoulder and ending at the zipper.

"You're sure you want this?"

I've had sex with plenty of men during my lifetime. A good many of those men have been quite imaginative. Some have even been memorable. With a few, it still hurts to think about. I've been here many times before. So, what is it about this man that makes me ache so?

Do I want him? I shiver. "In the worst possible way."

I'm back in Sirantha Jax universe this week. I'm really enjoying this series; it's sci fi romance and it's very good. This quote is from book three, "Doubleblind". Jax is an ambassador to a planet populated by sentient bugs who hate humans. She's getting ready for an official party.

She goes on. "You may wish to pay particular attention to Devri. His physiological readings, if I have analyzed them correctly, indicate a certain excitement in your presence. I have insufficient data to determine whether his interest is sexual."

Now that surprises the sh** out of me. Being attracted to soft-skins would certainly be considered a kink among Ithtorians, if not an outright perversion. I can't imagine such a misalliance being accepted.

"It might just be enthusiasm for the potential alliance," I offer.

"Possible," she acknowledges. "I would need to scan an Ithtorian male who is ready to mate before I could determine the meaning of the elevated heat levels I noted in Councilor Devri's anatomy while you were speaking."

Heh. I don't see us being offered that opportunity, no matter how hospitable the Ithtorians seem.
