Blurb from goodreads:

Mercy Thompson, car mechanic and shapeshifter, faces a threat unlike any other in this thrilling entry in the #1 New York Times bestselling series.

I am Mercedes Athena Thompson Hauptman.
My only “superpowers” are that I turn into a thirty-five pound coyote and fix Volkswagens. But I have friends in odd places and a pack of werewolves at my back. It looks like I’m going to need them.

Centuries ago, the fae dwelt in Underhill–until she locked her doors against them. They left behind their great castles and troves of magical artifacts. They abandoned their prisoners and their pets. Without the fae to mind them, those creatures who remained behind roamed freely through Underhill wreaking havoc. Only the deadliest survived.

Now one of those prisoners has escaped. It can look like anyone, any creature it chooses. But if it bites you, it controls you. It lives for chaos and destruction. It can make you do anything–even kill the person you love the most. Now it is here, in the Tri-Cities. In my territory.

It won’t, can’t, remain.

Not if I have anything to say about it.

Blurb from goodreads:

In this new installment in the No. 1 New York Times bestselling series, Mercy Thompson must face a deadly enemy to defend all she loves . . .

My name is Mercedes Athena Thompson Hauptman, and I am a car mechanic.

And a coyote shapeshifter . . . And the mate of the Alpha of the Columbia Basin werewolf pack.

Even so, none of that would have gotten me into trouble if, a few months ago, I hadn't stood upon a bridge and taken responsibility for the safety of the citizens who lived in our territory. It seemed like the thing to do at the time. It should have only involved hunting down killer goblins, zombie goats, and an occasional troll. Instead, our home was viewed as neutral ground, a place where humans would feel safe to come and treat with the fae.

The reality is that nothing and no one is safe. As generals and politicians face off with the Gray Lords of the fae, a storm is coming and her name is Death.

But we are pack, and we have given our word. We will die to keep it.

I could smell her fear, and it satisfied something deep inside me that had been writhing under her cool, superior gaze. I curled my upper lip so she could get a good look at my sharp teeth. I might only weigh thirty or so pounds in my coyote shape, but I was a predator...

Mechanic Mercy Thompson can shift her shape - but not her loyalty. When her former boss and mentor is arrested for murder and left to rot behind bars by his own kind, it's up to Mercy to clear his name, whether he wants her to or not.

Mercy's loyalty is under pressure from other directions, too. Werewolves are not known for their patience, and if Mercy can't decide between the two she cares for, Sam and Adam may make the choice for her.

Another favorite author and series. I'm anxious to see what's happening and how events play out. It releases in a few months, in March. March has lots of good books releasing, my poor bank account!

Soapy Saturday June 13th, 2015

I've been wanting to do something non-bookish on the blog but couldn't think what. I'm not much for cooking, I can't garden worth a darn, and I don't sew, knit,or do anything creative. Then I remembered that I make soaps, bath salts, and sugar scrubs, and that's both creative AND crafty. Every other Saturday, or when I remember :D, I'll share some photos and recipes and chat a bit. I'm by no means an expert, it's a casual hobby, though for a few years I did have an online store. I still sell if you ever want to place an order.

I'm in between books right now but I just finished reading an urban fantasy anthology, "Shifting Shadows: Stories from the World of Mercy Thompson", by Patricia Briggs. The quote is from page 56 in the print book, from the story "Silver".

It didn't take long for me to ready myself to go. I did not need a pack, just boots and a good woolen cloak. I should have changed forms because the wolf would have made the journey quicker. But I had only just regained my humanity and was loath to lose it. I stepped outside to put on my boots so the dirt on the soles wouldn't drop on the floor. The door opened again behind me.

Quote-Tastic #21 - Wolves Are Meant to Run in a Pack

This week's quote is from one of my favorite authors, Patricia Briggs. I love her books and her Mercy Thompson series is one of my favorites. Choosing one was hard, there are so many good ones. This is from Moon Called, the first of the Mercy Thompson books. Warren is one of my favorite wolves and here we find out how he joined the local werewolf pack.

It was I who introduced Adam and Warren, about the time Adam moved in behind me. I'd had Warren to dinner and we'd been laughing about something, I forget what, and one of Adam's wolves howled. I'll never forget the desolation on Warren's face.

I'd hear it all the time when I was growing up-wolves are meant to run in a pack. I still don't understand it completely myself, but Warren's face taught me that being alone was no trivial thing for a wolf.

The next morning, I'd knocked on Adam's front door. He listened to me politely and took the piece of paper with warren's phone number on it. I'd left his house knowing I'd failed.

It was Warren who told me what happened next. Adam summoned Warren to his house and interrogated him for two hours. At the end of it, Adam told Warren he didn't care if a wolf wanted to screw ducks as long as he'd listen to orders. Not actually in those words, if Warren's grin as he told me about it was an accurate measure. Adam uses crudeness as he uses all of his weapons: seldom, but with great effect.

I love this passage; it says great things about both Mercy and Adam.

Quote-Tastic #10 You my dear sir have succumbed to her wiles.

Anna at Herding Cats & Burning Soup has created a new weekly meme. Want to join along?

Click on the link above. Anna is posting hers on Mondays, as am I, but you can choose any day of the week that works for you. Leave me a link in your comment and I will check out your quotes!

I love the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs, love love love it. Have I mentioned that I love it? :D This is from Bone Crossed, book number four. Mercy and her fiance Adam, a werewolf alpha, are talking on the phone.

"Ghosts and cats, Bran says," I told him, "But my cat likes Stefan."
"Your cat likes anyone she can convince to pet her." Something about the way he said it-a caress in his voice-made me suspicious. I listened carefully and heard it, a faint purr.
"She likes you anyway," I said. "How'd she talk you into letting her into your house again?"
"She yowled at the back door." He sounded sheepish. I'd never seen or heard of a cat that would associate with werewolves or coyotes until Medea announced her presence at the door of my shop. Dogs will-and so will most livestock-but not cats. Medea loves anyone who will pet her...or has the potential to pet her. Not unlike some people I know.
"She's playing you and Samuel off each other," I informed him. "and you, my dear sir, have succumbed to her wiles."
"My mother warned me about succumbing," he said meekly. "You'll have to save me from myself. When I have you to pet, I won't need her."
ROWWWR! Have you read this series yet? It's AWESOME!

Review of Alpha and Omega: Cry Wolf: Volume Two by Patricia Briggs, et al.

Publisher: InkLit
Writers: Patricia Briggs, David Lawrence
Illustrators: Todd Herman, Jenny Frison
Series: Alpha and Omega: Cry Wolf
Format Read: Hardcover Graphic Novel
Source: the publisher in exchange for an honest review
Release Date: May 7, 2013
Buying Links: Amazon  Barnes & Noble  The Book Depository

Blurb from Amazon:
A world of shapeshifting wolves comes vividly to life in this collection of four comics based on Cry Wolf, the first book in Patricia Briggs’s #1 New York Times bestselling Alpha and Omega series.

Charles and Anna are on the hunt for a rogue werewolf in the Montana mountains. The creature has morphed into something so dark that it kills everything in its path: deer, elk, grizzlies…humans.

But the wolf is the creature of something far more powerful. One of Charles and Anna’s own pack harbors a centuries-old secret that has come back to haunt him—and wreak vengeance on those around him.

Charles and Anna—unaware of the truth—are two innocents who stand in the way. But even as members of their pack rally around them, Anna’s rare power comes into its own—and is unleashed…

Bea's Thoughts:

I gobbled this up as soon as I got it then I pulled out volume 1 and re-read them both, back to back. I reviewed volume 1 back in October. I'm still not thrilled with the art but at least in volume 1, Charles looked like an American Indian while in volume two he looks white. It's the same illustrator so I don't know why his look would change so dramatically but it was disappointing. Additionally, his wolf looks drastically different and Anna's freckles disappeared. As before, the facial expressions are someties odd and Anna's arms have a tendency to be extra-long and skinny, like a Gumby doll. Despite that, the art as a whole works with the text and moves the story along. The colors are gorgeous and the shading is at times exquisite.

The story moves along quickly and is a good adaptation of the novel. As always, there have been cuts. I particularly miss the scene back at Charles's house where Charles and Bran are talking and we don't get Anna's family at the wedding nor do we get the hunt after the bonding ceremony. But, the story ends with a nice tribute to Walter, who was one of my favorite characters. We also get a brief flashback scene of Bran's mother who is one mean-looking, and just plain mean, woman.

There a a few panels where, if you haven't read the original book, you may be confused but overall, this volume and its predecessor work well as a cohesive story that can be read independently of the book. I enjoyed reading, and re-reading it.

Review of Frost Burned by Patricia Briggs

Publisher: Ace
Series: Mercy Thompson #7
Format Read: Hardcover
Release Date: March 5, 2013
Buying Links:  Amazon   Barnes & Noble   Book Depository

Book Blurb (from goodreads):

*Contains spoilers for the earlier books*

Shapeshifter Mercy Thompson's life is calming down, at least enough that she can focus on mundane matters like Black Friday sales. But on her return, Mercy is unable to contact her mate, Alpha Adam Hauptman, or the other members of their pack. All she knows is that Adam is angry and in pain. With the werewolves fighting a political battle to gain acceptance from the public, Mercy fears Adam's disappearance may be related - and that he and the pack are in serious danger. Outclassed and on her own, Mercy may be forced to seek assistance from the most unlikely of allies: the vampire seethe.

Quote:
He also saw something else. Adam had a habit of keeping track of things in his environment - situational awareness. It had saved his butt more than once. He was especially aware of things that could be used as weapons.
One of the blades on the shelves was moving. He didn't catch it in actual motion, but when they'd first come into the room, it had been in the back corner of  the bottom shelf of the bookcase nearest the mirror. Now it was in the middle of  the shelf and had slid nearly off the edge.
He wondered if it might be chasing Asil, if only very slowly.

Bea's Thoughts:  *May contain spoilers for earlier books*

Sigh, this was such a good book. While I liked "River Marked", it was just okay. The best part of it was Mercy learning about her father and connecting with  Coyote. Oh, and seeing Mercy and Adam on their honeymoon. :) This one was back home in the Tri-Cities with many of the usual gang. That was part of what I liked so much and Patty's writing was top-notch.

In "Frost Burned" Briggs picks up threads from previous stories - the movement against supernatural beings, Mercy's relationships with her garage assistants and their families as well as her evolving relationship with the pack, especially its females, the federal bureau Cantrip (Combined Nonhuman and Transhuman Relations Provisors), Marsilia's power play and subsequent falling out with Stefan, Mercy's gifts from Coyote, the fae's declaration of sovereignty - and mixes them all into a exciting, emotion-filled story that moves the series forward.

Although the action takes place over a few days, I wouldn't call this story fast or action packed, though it has plenty of action. An angry Adam is a scary, scary Adam. Not that Mercy is any softy when she's angry. As the blurb says, her pack and husband are missing, and Mercy isn't about to let anything get in her way of finding them. She enlists allies, friends, and former friends in her mission to find the pack. Naturally, finding the pack doesn't solve everything and there are twists and turns in typical Briggs fashion. I did NOT anticipate the last 70 or so pages.

There's humor, romance, action, character growth and development, and surprises. While some of the bad guys work for the government, Briggs doesn't take the easy way out of painting the entire government as evil or bad but portrays it realistically. For the Adam lovers, there are several chapters from his viewpoint. As much as I enjoyed those, I particularly enjoyed the scenes between him and Mercy. I love the relationship they have - respectful, caring, teasing, understanding. Mercy is a little softer than when the series began but she's still independent, feisty and loyal; she's more confident yet  aware (okay, sometimes :D) of her limitations (though Adam might disagree), still kicks ass, and still open to learning about her abilities as a Walker. Her relationship with Jesse, now her stepdaughter, is evolving too. I liked seeing Mercy as a responsible stepmother. It's a new side to her, one I like.

"Frost Burned" is an excellent addition to the series and I'm counting down until the next book.

MATH, Mercy's initials are MATH. Giggle.

I received a hardcover from the publisher for review.
