Blurb from goodreads:

Some people just need killing.
Marlena Altizer Durst lives in her husband’s shadow. He controls her every move—what she wears, the food she eats, and the friends she’s allowed to make. If she disobeys, there are… consequences. And he has all the power, so nobody would believe her.

Her Cinderella story has been well-documented and it seems that she leads a fairy-tale life. But nobody ever wonders if Cinderella was happy after she married the prince. Marlena has traded freedom and safety for luxurious imprisonment, and most days, that seems like a bad bargain. Death may be the only exit she’s allowed. Just like his first wife. And his second.

Unless she flips the script.

And gets away with murder…

Blurb from goodreads:

It’s not easy to tread lightly wearing steel-toed boots.

Sirantha Jax isn’t known for diplomatic finesse. As a “Jumper” who navigates ships through grimspace, she’s used to kicking ass first and taking names later—much later. Not exactly the obvious choice to sell the Conglomerate to the Ithtorians, a people whose opinions of humans are as hard as their exoskeletons.

And Ithiss-Tor council meetings aren’t the only place where Ambassador Jax needs to maneuver carefully. Her lover, March, is frozen in permanent “kill” mode, and his hair-trigger threatens to sabotage the talks—not to mention their relationship.

But Jax won’t give up on the man or the mission. With the Outskirts beleaguered by raiders, pirates, and the flesh-eating Morgut, an alliance with Ithiss-Tor may be humanity’s only hope.

Which has Jax wondering why a notorious troublemaker like her was given the job.

I'm back in Sirantha Jax universe this week. I'm really enjoying this series; it's sci fi romance and it's very good. This quote is from book three, "Doubleblind". Jax is an ambassador to a planet populated by sentient bugs who hate humans. She's getting ready for an official party.

She goes on. "You may wish to pay particular attention to Devri. His physiological readings, if I have analyzed them correctly, indicate a certain excitement in your presence. I have insufficient data to determine whether his interest is sexual."

Now that surprises the sh** out of me. Being attracted to soft-skins would certainly be considered a kink among Ithtorians, if not an outright perversion. I can't imagine such a misalliance being accepted.

"It might just be enthusiasm for the potential alliance," I offer.

"Possible," she acknowledges. "I would need to scan an Ithtorian male who is ready to mate before I could determine the meaning of the elevated heat levels I noted in Councilor Devri's anatomy while you were speaking."

Heh. I don't see us being offered that opportunity, no matter how hospitable the Ithtorians seem.

Quote-Tastic #12 Do you two ever finish your own sentences?

Anna at Herding Cats & Burning Soup has created a new weekly meme.

Want to join along? Click on the link above. Anna is posting hers on Mondays, as am I, but you can choose any day of the week that works for you. Leave me a link in your comment and I will check out your quotes!

This week's quote is from "Wanderlust" by Ann Aguirre. It's science fiction with a strong romantic theme. After a battle, Sirantha and Vel get separated from the rest of their party. Here, they have all met up again at the med center. It's a sweet, tender scene (contains mild swearing).

"Good work out there today." That seems to register where nothing else has.
"Thanks. You, too. You did exactly as I hoped you would. You got Vel medical attention and kept safe."
"You scared the shit out of me," I admit, low.
March turns to me then and pulls me into his arms. I drop my head onto his chest, even though he's covered in dried blood. "I know. I took my turn, trust me. You must've been asleep when I started trying to find you again, Jax. It was like..." He pauses, and I know he's thinking of when Vel took me. When he thought I was dead. "I'm sorry I put you through that, but I couldn't-"
"I know," I say softly. I just thought, well, I was afraid-"
"You didn't let me down."
"Do you two ever finish your own sentences?" Jael asks.
Shit, I forgot he is here. If he didn't look so beat-up, I'd hit him. "Rarely."
I expect him to make some wisecrack, but he merely says, perhaps a touch wistfully, "Must be nice."
