Ebook Deals - Krista D Ball and Layton Green

Two of my favorite authors are having sales on some of their books. I've read and reviewed both authors and have their newest books in my review TBR pile.

First up, today is the last day to get "What Kings Ate and Wizards Drank" for 99 cents at Amazon. Don't have a Kindle? No problem. Buy the Kindle book, email the receipt to Krista at kristadball@gmail.com, tell her what format you need, and she'll send it to you. While you're there, why not pick up her new one, "Hustlers, Harlots, and Heroes", which I'll be reviewing later this month. It's not on sale, but it's the next book in Krista's historical reference series.

Second, Layton Green has a new book, "The Metaxy Project", not part of his Dominic Grey series, out today. I'll be reviewing it next month.

Penguin Books (USA) and Nora Roberts Help Tackle Hunger In Maryland

From a press release sent out by Penguin Group USA:

The “Be Thankful” initiative urges support of our less fortunate neighbors

Thanksgiving is a time to gather with family around an extravagant meal and be thankful for all the security and stability in our lives. But it’s also a reminder that a cold winter is ahead, and it is therefore important to acknowledge our less fortunate neighbors, which is why Penguin is proud to support The Maryland Food Bank, with Penguin’s first ever “Be Thankful” initiative.

#1 New York Times bestselling Penguin author, Nora Roberts was born in Silver Spring, Maryland and has a deep affinity for her home state, having set many of her more than 200 novels in Maryland. Her recent NY Times bestseller, “Thankless in Death” is a suspense thriller which centers around loved ones coming together for Thanksgiving. The brutal reality of hunger in Maryland sadly has its own frightening narrative. “I was shocked to discover that the Maryland Food Bank distributes more than 34.6 million pounds of food – the equivalent of almost 29 million meals each year – and despite that significant effort, families still go hungry in our region,” stated Nora Roberts. “I am proud to help raise awareness of this issue and to applaud the incredible work that local food banks do daily to eradicate hunger in Maryland. The holiday season is a great reminder to capture the spirit of giving thanks and helping those in need.”
Penguin would also like to acknowledge the efforts of Governor Martin O’Malley, who is committed to ending childhood hunger in Maryland by 2015. “One hungry child is one too many,” said Governor O’Malley. “Because of its connection to student achievement, workforce strength, physical health, and behavioral health, we’ve made eradicating childhood hunger a priority in our State.”

“We are delighted to support The Maryland Food Bank for the first time. The negative cascading effect that food insecurity can have on a person, a child or a family, is devastating. Penguin is proud to recognize the tireless efforts of The Maryland Food Bank and its commitment to lead the fight against food insecurity and hunger,” said Leslie Gelbman, President of Mass Market Publishing, Penguin Group (USA). To mark the occasion, Penguin Group (USA) is making a $10,000 donation to The Maryland Food Bank. “There are more than 457,000 people in our service area who don’t know where their next meal is coming from, and more than a third are children,” says Maryland Food Bank President & CEO Deborah Flateman. “The emotional toll of hunger is especially high during the holidays. Families are struggling to put food on the table, heat their home, and at the same time keep traditions alive, so their children feel normal – at least for one day. This gift will go a long way, and help many, many families in need.” The donation ensures that over 20,000 meals will be made available to the citizens of Maryland who are in dire need of food assistance.

You too can become involved in the “Be Thankful” initiative by donating food or volunteering; to view a complete list of the affiliated food banks and or participate in a Virtual Food Drive, please visit Feeding America’s national Food Bank Locator at http://bit.ly/9ociO.

About the Maryland Food Bank

The Maryland Food Bank is a nonprofit hunger-relief organization, leading the movement to end hunger throughout Maryland. For more than thirty years, the Maryland Food Bank has partnered with communities across the state to distribute food to individuals and families in need. Through carefully-crafted programs, the food bank aims to meet the immediate needs of Marylanders while simultaneously working to find long term ways to reduce hunger statewide. Currently distributing 79,000 meals per day – nearly 29 million meals annually – the Maryland Food Bank will continue to expand its efforts until hunger ends.

The Maryland Food Bank (www.mdfoodbank.org) operates from three facilities: one in Baltimore, one in Salisbury, and one in Hagerstown. Through an extensive network of soup kitchens, pantries, schools and other community-based organizations, food is distributed throughout 22 counties, including Baltimore City, and Somerset, Wicomico, and Washington counties – some of the most food-insecure regions in Maryland.

That gorgeous poster was designed by Brian Selznick, Caldecott winner, 2012 Children's Choice Book Awards Illustrator of the Year, and creator of The Invention of Hugo Cabret and Wonderstruck. He created it for Children's Book Week, the longest-running national literacy initiative in the country. The idea is to celebrate books for young readers and the joy of reading.

If you're reading this blog, you already know about the joy of reading. Maybe you can help share it. I'll be reviewing one children's book a day every day during Children's Book Week. Some I own, some belong to the school where I teach, and some I received for review. New Look!

Well, as you've noticed, the Nook has a new look. I'd been wanting something different for a while but none of the Blogger themes were quite what I wanted and I wanted some functions, such as drop down navigation, that weren't available and I lacked the ability to do myself.

I poked around a bit and decided I liked Parajunkee's designs. She asked me lots of questions about what I wanted and I asked her lots of questions, which she patiently answered.

As you can see, some stuff went missing. Blogger decided it didn't want to play nicely and Rachel, Parajunkee, saved what she could of widgets and links. I'll be slowly adding back in the missing ones and moving things around but this is a good opportunity for me to do some cleaning and sprucing so some things might not come back. If you find you miss something, let me know and I can look at adding it back.

There's a new button so grab that if you want.

I'm so excited, I love the new design. I hope you do too.

First Book and Their Big Give Campaign for Children

It's holiday season; last month there was Diwali and this month there's Hannukah and Christmas, oh and winter solstice. The month of January has Kwanzaa and undoubtedly I've missed some. What all these holidays have in common is the tradition of giving; giving your time, your money or an actual physical present. It's also a time of year when many, many organizations of all varieties seek your money.

First Book is no different; they always need money so that they can provide low-cost or free books to children in need. Since I work with young children and I am an avid reader, this organization seems tailor-made for my support. I'm getting ahead of myself; here's some basic info about First Books from the Groupon page:
First Book is a nonprofit that aims to empower children from low-income families in the United States and Canada by improving their reading skills and subsequently their academic success and quality of education by increasing their access to books and educational resources. The organization connects classrooms and programs serving children with brand new books through its First Book Marketplace, where it sells new books online to community programs and schools at a reduced cost, and through the First Book National Book Bank, a clearinghouse for en masse donations from publishers. Since 1992, First Book has distributed more than 100 million books and educational resources in partnership with a network of more than 35,000 schools and programs across North America. After receiving books from First Book, children read more at home and overcome a pervasive barrier to success.

First Book has partnered up with Groupon, the social coupon site, to make it easy for people to donate money to buy books. Please, take a minute, share your love of book and donate to help a child out and make them happy. Thank you. <3

Give the gift of reading to a child this holiday season!

The autumn/winter holiday season has begun and gift giving is on many people's minds. Scholastic Books is also thinking about gift giving and they want your help. This year, Scholastic, The UPS Store and Marine Toys for Tots Foundation are gearing up for the holidays with the READ EVERY DAY holiday campaign to promote the love of reading and encourage all families to help give books to kids who need them most, including those who lost books due to Hurricane Sandy.

Here’s how you can help:
  1. Download Storia®, Scholastic’s teacher-recommended children’s ereading app, and help pass on the reading to kids in need. Upon downloading Storia, families will receive five free children’s ebooks (Scholastic chooses them so they may or not be relevant to your kids needs and wants) to start a home digital library. For every additional ebook purchased on Storia now through Dec. 31, 2012, Scholastic will donate a children’s book to a child in need through the Toys for Tots Literacy Program (with a minimum of 50,000 books committed).
  2. Visit a participating The UPS Store location across the U.S. now through Dec. 31, 2012 to purchase a donation card to benefit the Toys for Tots Literacy Program, a year-round initiative of the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. Every dollar donated helps provide new books from Scholastic for less fortunate children in local communities throughout the U.S. Customers can also donate online at The UPS Store Facebook page.  As part of the longstanding collaboration with Scholastic Literacy Partners, The UPS Store location that raises the most money during the holidays will receive 500 books to share with families in their local community.
This holiday literacy drive is part of Scholastic’s global literacy campaign, Read Every Day. Lead a Better Life, an effort to help all children experience the love of reading and owning a book.
Help us spread the holiday cheer – give the gift of ereading and we’ll donate a book. It’s that easy!

I downloaded Storia and it seems like an okay app, though not the most user-friendly. You have to set up bookshelves when the program first starts up. When you click on a bookshelf, after setting it up, the upper right has a "More eBooks" icon in the upper right. Clicking it gives you a pop up with five more books; however, clicking on the book info does not do anything or take you to the book's page. So, if you want more info about that book, you have to leave the app. Now, that may be so that kids can't accidentally purchase a book when using it but as an adult using the app, it was annoying. I can't use the program in my classroom and I don't have kids of my own so I won't really use the app but I was curious about it. I perused Scholastic's blog and they do have posts on using Storia with children so that's a plus.

Regardless,  I'm pleased that Scholastic is working to help young children and their families. I will definitely be visiting my local The UPS Store location to donate books. Take a few minutes this season, or better, all year long, and give the gift of reading.

The Carpenter's Gift

Although I don't talk about it much on here, I'm a big supporter of Habitat for Humanity. I've volunteered with my local chapter off and on for about 15 years, as my health permits. If you're not familiar with Habitat, they are a global organization that believes every man, woman and child should have a decent, safe, and affordable place to live. While they are Christian based, they build with people in need regardless of race or religion. They accept volunteers and partner families regardless of religious affiliation.

I want to tell you about a children's book they have, "The Carpenter's Gift", published by Random House Children's Books, written by David Rubel and illustrated by Jim LaMerche. Originally issued in 2011, this year they are marking the 80th anniversary of the annual Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center. Later this year and next, there will be special efforts, currently unknown, made to highlight Habitat’s unique partnership with Rockefeller Center and their annual Christmas Tree donation to Habitat's housing ministry.

Author David Rubel and Habitat for Humanity International collaborated in the creation of "The Carpenter’s Gift", and the author shares a percentage of his earnings with Habitat. Habitat sees the lessons found within the book’s pages as an important way of conveying its mission. In the book, a pinecone grows into a towering tree and brings happiness to millions and a home to young girl. Similarly, Habitat’s hope is that The Carpenter’s Gift plants the concept of ‘sharing your blessings’ in the hearts of young readers. Families or individuals who want to support Habitat’s mission and make this special story even more memorable can order a unique collector’s item bookplate made from the 2010 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree at www.habitat.org/thecarpentersgift.

This is a new to me book, though I have a couple others, adult not children, by them regarding their mission and their origins. I'm not trying to preach to anyone here; I am a big believer in all people having affordable, safe, decent housing and Habitat is one organization working towards that goal. I haven't gotten my hands on this book yet, but I will. We're going into a season of major religious holidays so please consider purchasing this book - for your family, your friends, your local school or your local library.

THE CARPENTER'S GIFT: A Christmas Tale about the Rockefeller Center Tree
Author: David Rubel
Illustrator: Jim LaMarche
Publisher: Random House Books for Young Readers
Ages: 5–8
Format: HARDCOVER, EBOOK
ISBN: 978-0-375-86922-8
Length: 48 pages

Book Blurb (from publisher):

This new classic Christmas gift book "brings together two great traditions: the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree and the neighbor-helping-neighbor program of Habitat for Humanity." Opening in Depression-era New York City, The Carpenter's Gift tells the story of eight-year-old Henry and his father selling Christmas trees. They give a Christmas tree to construction workers building Rockefeller Center and celebrate together. Through the kindness of the construction workers and neighbors, Henry gets his wish for a nice, warm home to replace his family's drafty shack. He plants a pinecone from that first Rockefeller Center Tree. As an old man, Henry repays the gift by donating the enormous tree that has grown from that pinecone. After bringing joy to thousands as the Rockefeller Center tree, its wood will be used to build a home for another family in need.

You can buy the book directly from Habitat, from Random House or any major book seller. This will make a great gift, not only for the young children in your life but for anyone who cares about housing, tradition, or their fellow human being.

Amityville Horrible by Kelley Armstrong, A New Novella

Yes, Kelley has ANOTHER one. She is a busy lady and I love it. This is an Otherworld story featuring Jaime Vargas, the necromancer fans either love or hate. "Amityville Horrible" will be available as an ebook first, before the end of the year, with the hardcover to follow in January. Squee! However, the hardcover of"Amityville Horrible" will only be available as a signed, limited edition, with a much smaller print run than other novellas by Kelley, so don't delay if you're interested. It won't be available to large online retailers or wholesalers, so a direct order from Subterranean is your best bet. If you have a copy of Kelley's novella, "Forbidden" on order, they'll automatically match your number. The book is available for pre-order. There's no cover yet but according to the Subterranean Press site, the dust jacket and interior illustrations will be by Maurizio Manzieri. The ebook will be available from the same online vendors as Angelic, Counterfeit Magic and Hidden.

The blurb: Jaime Vegas—spiritualist, entertainer and, unbeknownst to her audience, real-life necromancer—swore she’d never do another reality ghost show after the last fiasco. But when she’s railroaded into a charity gig, she finds herself back on the set, this time with a cast of photogenic college kids, an up-and¬-coming Russian spiritualist, and a tale of missing girls and murder in New England. It’s cheesy, but that’s show business. With her werewolf Alpha lover, Jeremy Danvers, along to keep her nights interesting, it’s not so bad really. Until the bloody ghosts show up. Jaime has never faced spirits like these, and no matter how hard she tries, they won’t be ignored.
