Cover Reveal: Hidden Gates by D.T. Dyllin

Today I have an absolutely gorgeous cover to share with you. It's a real eye catcher, and uses my favorite colors. "Hidden Gates" is the first book in the P.J. Stone Gates trilogy by D.T Dyllin. The expected release date is January 2013.

The blurb (from the author):

For P.J. Stone, being a “Seer” who has never seen anything is less than fun. And P.J. isn’t known for her patience.

To make matters worse, she must choose a suitable mate to continue the Seer bloodline. Duty always comes before her heart…at least that’s what her parents taught her. When she finds herself wanting someone who is considered off-limits, P.J. is forced to question everything she believes.

As if navigating her love life isn’t complicated enough, P.J. finally receives a vision—of a threat to her world that only she can perceive. But no one will believe a fledgling Seer’s warnings. With nowhere else to turn, she may decide to trust a stranger with her life, her world, and maybe even her heart.

Cynical-Optimist. Chocolate-holic. Sarcasm Addict. Paranormal Believer. Self-Imposed Insomniac. Sci-Fi Geek. Animal Lover. Writer…are just a few words to describe D.T. Dyllin. She was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and now lives in Nashville, Tennessee with her husband and two very spoiled GSDs.

Is that not a gorgeous cover? The colors, the shading, the reflection in the eye, just lovely. Quick, go add this to your TBR list so you don't forget about it between now and January.

ARC Review of Trapped by Kevin Hearne

Publisher: Del Rey
Series: Iron Druid Chronicles #5
Format Read: eGalley
Release Date: November 27, 2012
Buying Links:  Amazon   Barnes & Noble   The Book Depository

Book Blurb (from goodreads):

After twelve years of secret training, Atticus O’Sullivan is finally ready to bind his apprentice, Granuaile, to the earth and double the number of Druids in the world. But on the eve of the ritual, the world that thought he was dead abruptly discovers that he’s still alive, and they would much rather he return to the grave.

Having no other choice, Atticus, his trusted Irish wolfhound, Oberon, and Granuaile travel to the base of Mount Olympus, where the Roman god Bacchus is anxious to take his sworn revenge—but he’ll have to get in line behind an ancient vampire, a band of dark elves, and an old god of mischief, who all seem to have KILL THE DRUID at the top of their to-do lists.

Quote:
"They were once merely Druids, you say. The Tuatha De' Danann."
"Yes, but they were skilled in their own magic even before that."
"How did they become gods? What powers did they accrue when they did?
"They became gods once people worshipped them as such. They became vessels for Celtic faith, tuning forks for our yearnings, keepers of our hopes and prayers. And the powers they gained were those assigned to them by worshippers. Manannan Mac Lir was not a psychopomp until people thought he was; he was only a Druid with some extra powers in the sea."....
"Godhead transcends generations and requires the concerted belief of a large number of people." ....
"The connection is that there are clearly some powers and processes in the universe we simply don't understand yet. They are ineffable-for now. I don't know how it's possible for Gaia to have a magical nature. And the Tuatha De' Danann cannot tell you how, precisely, they gained the powers of gods on top of the powers of Druids. But they  can tell you they didn't always possess them. Some grew slowly, and some were discovered abruptly. And it's no different with any other gang of gods....the smart ones will tell you they're not sure how they got the gig they got and they don't remember creating humanity, much less the world. For most of space and time, they weren't there; and then, one day, they were, complete with a small but hopefully growing collection of praying humans."....
"Nobody has the answer, do they?" she asked quietly.
"No. I'm sorry."
Bea's Thoughts:

I love this series, I don't ever want it to end. Hearne takes mythology and Druidry and brings them to the modern world in stories that are full of action, humor, religious and philosophical discussion, pop culture references, a little romance, strong plotting and in-depth characterization. All but one have been four and five star reads for me (over on goodreads since I don't use ratings here.) I gave this one four stars.

Life is rarely dull with Atticus around, especially as he tends to speak without thinking first. It's that tendency that gets him into so much trouble. His words have unintended consequences and then he has to to try to clean up and make amends. For the most part, Atticus is a live and let live guy; you leave him alone and he'll leave you alone. But if you mess with something or someone that matters to him, he gets involved. Between that and his speak first, think later tendency, he winds up in many adventures. He's an honorable man and always repays his debts.

Those debts come calling as he's trying to finish up the last stage of Granuaile's Druid training. They are constantly interrupted, there are numerous assassination attempts on their lives, and finding out who is responsible and the connections amongst everything going on is one heck of a roller coaster ride. Along the way, Atticus and Granuaile hang out with a sea god, see Amelia Earhart (and oh boy, was Granuaile NOT HAPPY about that), Atticus finally admits he's attracted to Granuaile, they meet new elementals and oh yes, they go to Hel. :D

Hearne winds up some storylines from earlier books, advances others and introduces new ones. I was a bit concerned when I first found out that this book takes place twelve years in the future, but it wasn't a problem at all. For most of the book, they are out in the wilderness or off in other planes of reality. The few times Atticus and Granuaile are in the modern world, Hearne keeps the details vague enough that it feels current but not stagnant.

The pace is fast, the plot convoluted but tightly woven, it's a nearly perfect story. "Trapped" is an excellent addition to the series and I'm counting down the days to the next one. Now, go to your favorite book store or book site and buy this book.

Some favorite quotes:
"Oh yeah, I forgot. Irish wolfhounds are the ultimate accessory for humans."
"So they've decided you're a tad easier to kill. Nothin' personal, y'see. It's not your fault that your life is in the way of their personal ambition." "Silly of me to be offended, then."
Dark tangles of hair, groomed by static or maybe playful kittens, provided stark chaotic frames for pale symmetrical faces.
People go into sporting goods stores ostensibly to prepare themselves to get closer to nature, but, in fact, every time they buy another plastic doodad, they're doing just the opposite.
"You sent in the clowns?" I said into the phone.
Druid's Log, July 15: Dark elves are not only quick and efficient killers but creative and pyrotechnically inclined ones. (I love the Star Trek reference and it's not the only one in the book.)
I beamed at him. "You're my favorite sea god, you know." "Aw, get your nose out of me arse. Just make life interestin' as ye promised." (That of course is something that Atticus has no trouble doing.)
Really, go pre-order the book NOW!

I received an eARC from the publisher for review.

Cover Reveal: Pieces by Michelle Davidson Argyle

Today I'm excited to participate in the cover reveal for a new young adult/new adult novel, "Pieces" by Michelle Davidson Argyle. It's the follow up to "The Breakaway", which released in May of this year. "Pieces" will be available February 14th, 2013; it can be read as a stand alone.

The blurb (from the author):
Two years after watching her kidnappers go to prison, Naomi Jensen is still in love with one of them. Jesse will be released in a few years, and Naomi knows college is the perfect distraction while she waits. But when her new friend Finn makes her question what is right and what is wrong, she begins to wonder if Jesse is the one for her … until she discovers he's out on parole. Naomi must sort through her confusion to figure out where love and freedom truly lie—in Finn, who has no connections to her past, or Jesse, who has just asked her to run away with him.
Pieces is a companion to The Breakaway and can be read independently, if desired.
Michelle lives and writes in Utah, surrounded by the Rocky Mountains. She loves the seasons, but late summer and early fall are her favorites. She adores chocolate, sushi, and lots of ethnic food, and loves to read and write books in whatever time she can grab between her sword-wielding husband and energetic daughter. She believes a simple life is the best life.

Just when life was calming down again, Hurricane Sandy came along. I was fortunate, my state and the area of the state I live in were lightly hit. We had minor flooding, and some downed trees and power poles. My heart goes out to everyone in the US and Haiti who were less fortunate.

It was a fairly busy week at the blog -

The Devil's Thief Book Trailer

The Devil's Thief by Samantha Kane releases soon, on November 12th, so Random House kindly sent out this book trailer to pique out interest. You may recall that I recently interviewed Ms. Kane and I also posted an excerpt.

What did you think? I didn't love it, I wish they had used real people in it and the music maybe could have been a little sassier but I think it gives a good idea of what the book is about.

Review of What the Cat Saw by Carolyn Hart

Publisher: Berkley Prime Crime
Series: Nela Farley #1
Release Date: October 2, 2012
Buying Links:  Amazon   Barnes & Noble   The Book Depository

Book Blurb (from goodreads):

National bestselling author Carolyn Hart presents an original new novel about a woman with a curious ability that drops her headfirst into a world of intrigue and murder

Ever since the death of her fiancĂ©, Nela Farley has found herself plagued by a sixth sense: she understands the thoughts of cats when she looks into their eyes. Nela knows that what she’s experiencing is completely irrational and tries to convince herself that she is simply transferring her own thoughts that she doesn’t want to face.

When her adventurous sister, Chloe, goes on a trip and asks for a favor, Nela welcomes the distraction and agrees to substitute at Chloe’s job at a charitable foundation. Chloe has arranged a place for her sister to stay, but when Nela shows up, she encounters the previous tenant’s cat and gets a flash of thought: “. . . dead . . . dead and gone . . . She loved me . . . board rolled on the second step . . .”

Nela wants to ignore what the cat saw, but the idea that the death of former tenant Marian Grant wasn’t an accident is something she can’t ignore. As Nela begins to do some research into Marian’s life, strange events begin to occur, all seeming to lead back to the Haklo Foundation. But when a detective becomes suspicious of Nela’s sister and a second murder occurs, Nela realizes she’ll have to make the most of her unwanted ability to figure out what’s really going on, before she meets her own untimely end…

Quote:

Steve liked Nela's voice. Not high. Not low. Kind of soft. A voice you could listen to for a long time. She looked small in an oversize chintz-covered chair, dark hair still tangled by the wind, face pale, dark shadows beneath her eyes. Bu she no longer seemed remote as she had in his first glimpse at Hamburger Heaven.
His eyes slid from her to a photograph on the table next to her chair. A dark-haired laughing man in a tee and shorts stood near an outcrop of black rocks on a beach, the wind stirring his hair. Across the bottom of the photograph was a simple inscription: To Nela-Love, Bill. A red, white and blue ribbon was woven through the latticed frame.
Steve was accustomed to figuring from one fact to another. The picture had to belong to Nela. To carry the photograph with her as she traveled meant that the man and place mattered very much to her. He was afraid he knew exactly why the ribbon was in place and that would account for the undertone of sadness that he'd observed.
But tonight, she was fully alive, quick intelligence in her eyes, resolve in her face, a woman engaged in a struggle to survive. The brown tabby nestled next to her. One slender hand rested on the cat's back. As she spoke, she looked at him with a direct stare that said she was in the fight for as long as it took.

Bea's Thoughts:

When I first read the blurb for this book I thought, "This could be really good or really awful." Hearing cat's thoughts? That's sci fi or paranormal, depending on how it's handled. Would she anthropomorphize the cat? I hadn't read Hart before but I knew she had a good reputation so I took a chance and agreed to review it. I'm glad I did and I'll read the next book in this series and seek out some of her other books.

Nela is grieving the death of her fiance and also the loss of her job as an investigative reporter. When her sister Chloe goes on a vacation, Nela flies in to cover her at her job; while that sets up the story, I had a hard time finding it believable. Chloe works for a reputable philanthropic foundation, how likely is that they'd agree to this arrangement? Surely there's someone who could fill, or they could use a temp agency. That bothered me on and off throughout the story.

The first night Nela is at Chloe's apartment, someone breaks in and trashes the place. The police investigate and believe Nela did it herself. In the meantime, Nela has heard the cat's thoughts and this isn't the first time it has happened. What she hears, combined with what she learns about Marian's death, lead her to believe that Marian was murdered. Meanwhile, there are problems at the foundation where she's filling in and  soon she's investigating Marian's death and the problems at Haklo while dealing with the police, who are investigating her. In the midst of all this, she meets Steve, a reporter for the local paper. There's mutual interest, though there are trust issues and both have been hurt emotionally, Steve by his ex-wife and Nela by her fiance's death.

I had some qualms about how the psychic part of the book would be handled. The story is basically a straight contemporary story with just a hint of paranormal. Nela doesn't know how or why she can pick up cat's thoughts; at first she thought she might be having mental problems and she still isn't completely sure she's not but she becomes more willing to give credence to what she hears. Hart doesn't try to have cats think in full human fashion. Nela does pick up words but it's scattered words, not complete sentences, and the cats don't seem to be able to read Nela's thoughts. Hart doesn't give us an explanation for Nela's thoughts, which works in this book, but could get annoying if the series continues.  Overall, I thought she handled it well.

I liked "What the Cat Saw". Nela and Steve are likable, flawed but decent people. The mystery is tightly written and the story flows, my only gripe about it was the implausibility of Nela filling in for Chloe. The book is as much as about Nela coping with all of the changes in her life as it is about the mystery and Hart blends the two seamlessly for an emotional, gripping story.

I received a hardcover for review from Bab's Book Bistro.

Spotlight & Excerpt: Dangerous Affairs by Diana Miller

Another excerpt today, this time from a new romantic suspense, "Dangerous Affairs" by Diana Miller (is it just me or does she look like actress Shelley Long?). When she was eight, decided she wanted to be Nancy Drew. But no matter how many garbage cans she dug through, conversations she “accidentally” overheard, and attics she searched, she never found a single cryptic letter, hidden staircase, or anything else even remotely mysterious. She worked as a lawyer, a soda jerk, a stay-at-home mom, a hospital admitting clerk, and a conference host before deciding that the best way to inject suspense into her otherwise satisfying life was by writing about it.

Diana is a five-time nominee for the Romance Writers of America Golden Heart Award and winner of a Golden Heart for Dangerous Affairs—a romantic suspense novel that shows not everyone in her home state is Minnesota Nice. She lives in the Twin Cities with her family.

Excerpt

The doorbell rang, shooting a fresh blast of cold panic through Abby. She opened her mouth, but swallowed her scream—it had to be the police. Bad guys didn’t use doorbells. She unlocked and opened the front door with frozen fingers.

Josh was standing on the front porch, dressed in black jeans and a burgundy polo shirt, his hand on the doorjamb and his eyes narrowed. “What’s such a damn emergency?”

“I got another message. From the person who hates me.”

Josh expelled a clearly exasperated breath, running his fingers through his dark hair. “Look, I know I told you to take the letters seriously, but since the mail carrier delivered it hours ago, this isn’t exactly an emergency. Bring it to the station tomorrow. I’d like to get back to my date.”

“It didn’t come in the mail this time.” Abby’s voice rose an octave, her words tripping over each other. “It’s on my bathroom mirror, written in lipstick. Someone got into my house, and they could get in again.” She sounded half hysterical, but she couldn’t help it. This was in a different category from her normal hate mail.

Josh stepped into the house, closing the door behind him. “You were gone tonight?”

She slumped against one wall of the foyer, hugging herself and struggling to regain her control.

“Maddie and I were at a birthday party for Laura’s youngest son. At Pizzaville. We got home around nine thirty, and I put Maddie to bed. I read in the family room for a while, then went back upstairs. And found it.”

“Show me.” Josh grabbed her forearm and directed her up the stairs.

The message was short and to the point, capital letters written in red lipstick on the wall-size mirror:

LEAVE OR DIE BITCH. FROM YOUR BIGGEST FAN
