Excerpt from Dawn of a Dark Knight & Interview with author Zoe Forward

Hi! Grab a drink and get comfy as I chat with Zoe Forward about her book, herself. and writing. Zoe writes action-adventure paranormal romances. She lives in North Carolina with her family and an assortment of pets. A graduate of Duke University, she majored in biological anthropology, but always had a special love of archaeology, especially anything Egyptian.  Although a deep part of her wishes she had pursued a career that would have her at a dig site in a hot, sandy country, she's a small animal veterinarian, caring for everything from chinchillas to dogs...and even one hermit crab in there.  When she's not being a vet, a mom, or sneaking out to a movie with her husband, she's at her laptop writing.

Bea: What’s a typical day of writing for you? Are you a planner or do you wing it?

Zoe: I’m thrilled to grab a few minutes to type some lines or work on some edits between my job as a vet, family time and activities. There’s no set routine or time, although I do find myself writing late at night.  I haven’t been able to stick to outlines or plots, although I keep trying.  Every time I have a plan for where I want the story to go, the characters make their own decisions that surprise and frustrate me although it all works out in the end.

Bea: What prompted you to start writing? Would you continue to write if you were no longer published?

Zoe: I recall reading a dreadfully written paranormal with a rather blasĂ© plot.  Annoyed, I determined that the characters bumping around in my brain would be more interesting. So, I released them onto paper. And what an exhilarating experience.  I’ve got many more characters and stories. So, absolutely even if I never publish another novel (although Scimitar Magi series novel #2 is on the way), I’ll keep on writing.
Bea: What is your favorite part of writing? What is your least favorite part?

Zoe: My favorite part is when it all comes together. There is this moment that occurs towards the end of a novel when everything just works.  My least favorite part is writing a summary, tagline or a book blurb.  It’s tough to dwindle down an entire novel into a one-liner or a couple of sentences.

Bea: Who are some of your influences? Some of your favorite writers?

Zoe: I’ve got so many favorites and so many that influenced me.  My interest in paranormals started with Ann Rice and then I moved on to the masters of paranormal romance such as J.R.Ward and Christine Feehan.  But I remain a fan of humorous paranormal fiction such as Rick Gualtieri.

Bea: Do you prefer to read paper books or ebooks? Why?

Zoe: About 5 months ago I would’ve said I couldn’t imagine anything other than a paper book, but now that I have my newest e-reader it rocks!  I prefer it because it’s so much easier to hold.  And I can take a ton of books with me in one small location. However, I continue to be annoyed by the variances of formatting for books on the e-reader. Someday this kink will be worked out.

Bea: Can you tell us about the journey that led you to write your book?

Zoe: I’ve been a paranormal and mainstream fiction addict for decades. And I grew up a fan of Indiana Jones and Ann Rice. So, writing a paranormal was a no brainer.  For Dawn of a Dark Knight everything came together at the right creative moment. For Dawn of a Dark Knight everything came together at the right creative moment – my love of Egyptian mythology, my long-time passion for archaeology, my ideas about a new type of paranormal hero and more. It all just gelled.

Bea: How is your book different from other paranormal romances on the market?

Zoe: For the Scimitar Magi series I created a new type of hero. As a passionate reader of paranormals I’ve read my fair share of vampires, weres, face, shape shifters, and demons. And loved them all. But I wanted something fresh.  In DAWN OF A DARK KNIGHT the Scimitar Magi are ten pseudo-immortals that live within our modern world, but struggle to remain incognito.  The guys are not exactly thrilled to discover they vowed their eternal soul eons ago to serve the Egyptian gods, and now must execute daemons for the rest of their lives.  With no past-life memory, they’ve got no clue how to wield the powers gifted to them by the gods. Man to super warrior in a five-minute induction ceremony with no instruction manual.  So, it takes each Scimitar a long time to work it out.  At first losing control at random is the norm, and irritates the bejesus out of the more experienced guys.  Incidents happen like blowing up a gas station, which is misinterpreted as an international terrorist act.  And then there are the women. Each Scimitar gets matched to one woman for all time, and she is also reincarnated. But when, and if, this woman shows up is entirely up to the gods, who love to muck things up for entertainment.

Bea: You majored in biological anthropology, then switched to small animal veterinary work; what prompted the switch? Do you ever regret it? What’s your favorite part of vet work?

Zoe: I almost went to grad school in bio anthro, but I always wanted to be a vet. That pathway opened for me and I took it.  I enjoyed the living aspect of bio anthro…the getting out there in the rainforest and running around beneath the trees chasing monkeys or lemurs.  But I have never regretted my veterinary work.  My favorite aspect of veterinary work is the relationship that is built over years between an owner, the pet and myself.  We go through many journeys together -- the highs, the lows, the wins and losses. There is no greater honor than to be invited on that journey.

Bea: Anything that you want to add or say to your readers?

Zoe: I’d like to thank my readers for picking up my book and taking that chance.  There are so many options out there.  I’m honored when you put my book on your shelf.  I love to hear from readers whether it is via email, facebook or twitter. So, don’t be shy.

Blurb from the author ~

In the shadows of our world, a secret band of warriors fights to protect us. They are the last line of defense against an evil no human can stop.
An ancient nemesis has resurfaced. Duty demands that Ashor Vlahos, Scimitar Magi commander, recruit a magical healer to fortify the remaining eight magi. The gods' choice is the woman who helped him escape torture a decade ago. Ashor couldn't have imagined a better punishment for his vow-breaker homicidal incidents than for the gods to bind him irrevocably to the only woman in the universe he cannot have. The soul-searing desire she ignites in him is strictly forbidden.
Kira Hardy, M.D. is a brilliant, hardworking internal med resident with big secrets. But when Ashor asks for aid after a brutal daemon attack, she is sucked into his dangerous, secret world. Enslavement to the magi, no matter how hot they are, may be an unattractive life plan, but being targeted for death by their enemies is less tolerable.
She must trust the sexy, tormented Ashor to keep her safe while he must deny his ultimate desire and keep Kira at arm’s length lest he bring destruction down on them both. As a centuries-old evil catches up to them, they face a crucial decision—follow the gods' rules or follow their hearts.

EXCERPT

“Watch out,” Kira shrieked as a four-door import pulled alongside the SUV. The driver targeted Ashor with a gun.

“Down,” Ashor commanded. He dodged the firing muzzle and grabbed Kira forward to avoid the bullet’s path. The bullet left clean holes in the side windows and a spiderweb of cracked glass.

“Persistent bastards,” Ashor grumbled as he jammed the SUV into gear and rammed the car next to them before peeling away. Just as they hit the road, Ashor’s new cell phone squealed in a high-pitched, synthetic, musical noise.

“You okay?” he asked, ignoring the phone. To clear his side view, Ashor thrust his elbow through the spiderweb of cracked safety glass. Glass cubes showered everywhere. “Shit.” He wiped his body free of debris.

“I’m fine,” she replied. She whiplashed into the seat as the SUV was rammed forward.

Ashor tapped the brakes. The cars crashed together again, slamming them forward and then forcefully back in their seats.

“Can’t you do a spell or something to protect this car or make his explode?” Kira asked.

“What? No.”

“Aren’t you a magus, which implies magician or sorcerer? You guys are supposed to do magic spells.”

“The spells were lost.” His phone rang again.

“Lost? What kind of moronic organization loses the spells!”

Why Doesn't She Just Leave the Jerk? A Guest Post by Lori L. Clark

Please welcome author Lori L. Clark to the Nook today. She reads, she writes, she runs 1/2 marathons for fun. Ten things about her:

1. She's an only child.
2. She loves dogs!
3. She was born in Iowa City, Iowa and lived in Iowa her whole life until January 2007.
4. She worked as a professional psychic reader for 2 years.
5. She's a Pisces Sun, Leo Moon with Aquarius rising.
6. She's written 5 books and is in the process of brainstorming a 6th.
7. She doesn't look or act her age!
8. ISheran my first 1/2 marathon at age 50.
9. She loves 80's hair band music.
10. Her day job is as a claims payment analyst for one of Fortune 500 Magazine's "Top 100 places in America to work."

I haven't experienced any of the abuse that Jaq suffered. The date rape scene is fairly early in the book, and I used it as the main catalyst for a young woman's life spiraling out of control. That and making some really poor choices.

Some of the horrific things that happened to Jaq were the result of being too trusting of the wrong individual. Also she believed that somewhere, some way, something (or someone) would always come along to save the day.

Jaq's relationship with Damon was undeniably unhealthy. Unfortunately, it wasn't simply a matter of walking away from him and never looking back, in spite of how bad he was for her and to her. She knew how dangerous he was, the warning signs presented themselves to her, but what was it inside of her that caused her to continue seeing him?

I think a lot times we hear, see or read about someone in an abusive relationship and we think to ourselves, "Why doesn't she just leave the jerk and never look back?" While theoretically, that's the best, most sensible option, it's not always one the victim is able to make.

I believe it's often a case of poor self-esteem -- the thread of an idea in the back of their head that this is really all they deserve. Sometimes we stay in situations longer than we should because of fear and hopelessness. Who hasn't worked at a job they loathed far longer than they wanted to because they didn't think they had a choice? Who'll pay the bills? Where will I live? If I quit people will think I'm a failure. Etc. Etc.

Sometimes people believe that being in a relationship, any relationship, even an abusive one, is better somehow than being alone.

There's a book inside of me begging to be written about the victim of rape who decides the only way out of her torment is to take her own life. That one's on the back burner for now, while I finish my current manuscript. Watch for a cover reveal on that one to pop up very soon!

Thank you for your questions!

The Book
It's been said that when we look back over our lives, we are able to recognize the pivotal moments that in some way, shape, or form have led us to where we are today.

When Jacqueline Carter is fifteen, she crosses paths for the first time with Seth Thomas, a young man who unwittingly alters the direction of her life forever.

Jaq plans to break-up with her boyfriend on her sixteenth birthday. Instead, she is date-raped, and left emotionally broken. She builds a wall around her heart and begins spiraling downward on a road filled with drinking, drugs and physical abuse.

When Seth re-enters her life a few years later, the walls around her heart slowly come down and the two of them fall in love.

Unfortunately sometimes, fate has other ideas, and we're forced down a different road from which we initially set out.

Bea's Thoughts:

This was a quick, light, fun read and I'm looking forward to more in the series.

Emma and Jason have been best friends for years, since they were little children. They enjoy the same adventures and share a stubborn nature. They are also attracted to each other but neither has worked up the courage to admit it. Emma is afraid that if things go wrong, she'll lose not only her boyfriend but her best friend while Jason has hesitated in part due to a big secret. Now, he shares part of that secret with Emma and she handles it well. A little too well actually, it should have been more of a life-changing event. But, even as little children their adventures included hunting for imaginary things so Emma is primed to believe.

I figured out early on who the villain was and I'm also pretty sure I know who/what Jason really is. If I'm right, that could make for some very exciting stories. I really enjoyed the world building, the characters, and the humor. It's a short story, or maybe a novella? I'm not always clear on the distinction, but either way it's short and a fast read. On the one hand, I appreciate that Webb didn't pad the story as some authors are prone to doing; on the other hand, a little more fleshing out would have been good. Still, it was a good story, well written, interesting and fun. Go pick up a copy.

Quote-Tastic #1

Welcome to a brand new meme! Anna at Herding Cats & Burning Soup did a post a few weeks ago about some of her favorite quotes that was a lot of fun to read. She decided to make it a weekly meme and I jumped at the chance to participate. Want to join in the fun? Go here for all the info.

This week's quotes are from a book I read over the weekend, Playing Hooky by Rita Webb, and the review will be posting in a few hours. It was a cute book and I enjoyed it.

As always, Angelina's the image of vomit-inducing school-girl perfection.
My sister Angelina is too perfect. Straight-A honor student. Mother's sweetie pie. Father's angel.
If I told her how she'd make a cute cheerleader, she would tear me apart. She could flay a man alive with that sharp tongue of hers. And I love every stormy minute of having her as my best friend.
"All these years, you've been lying to me." "I'm me. I've always been me." If she walks away from me now, it would destroy me.
Mama Maria turns her back on us while stirring her pot and mumbling obscenities to herself that would make a sailor blush. "Incantations," Jason mouths to me. I'd never thought those words would be for chanting spells.

Blog Tour Cover & Trailer Reveal for Losing Francesca by J.A. Huss

Today's book is a New Adult/Young Adult romance mystery about a teenage girl who may or may not be a girl who was kidnapped as a child. I'm excited to share the cover and the book trailer with you.

About the author ~

J. A. Huss likes to write new adult books that make you think and keep you guessing. Her favorite genre to read is space opera, but since practically no one reads those books, she writes new adult science fiction, paranormal romance, contemporary romance, urban fantasy, and books about Junco (who refuses to be saddled with a label).

She has an undergraduate degree in horses, (yes, really–Thank you, Colorado State University) and a master’s degree in forensic toxicology from the University of Florida. She used to have a job driving around Colorado doing pretty much nothing but shooting the breeze with farmers, but now she just writes, runs the New Adult Addiction and Clean Teen Reads Book Blogs, and runs an online science classroom for homeschoolers.

ARC Review of Summer in Napa by Marina Adair

Publisher: Montlake Romance
Series: St. Helena Vineyard #2
Format Read: eGalley
Source: From the publisher in exchange for an honest review

Blurb from goodreads:
Six months ago, New York restaurant owner Alexis “Lexi” Moreau walked in on her husband, Jeff, and their sous chef mixing business with pleasure. Now, Lexi is back in her hometown of St. Helena, California, rebuilding her life and hoping to turn her grandmother’s patisserie into the bistro of her dreams. All she needs is luck, lots of hard work, and a way to avoid the thirty blind dates her matchmaking grandmother arranged. Enter Marco DeLuca — Jeff’s handsome, commitment-phobe best friend who has always had his sights set on Lexi. In high school, Marco convinced himself that Lexi was off-limits. And she still is, especially since Marco’s family’s wine business all depends on a deal with Jeff. But a fake summer romance is the perfect way for Lexi to distract the would-be suitors her grandmother has set up for her. A perfect way for Marco to realize she’s the only one that ever mattered. And a perfect way to fall deliciously in love.

Bea's Thoughts:

I have mixed thoughts about this book. It was a quick read and I enjoyed parts of it but there were some things that were just cliched or overdone and parts I flat out disliked (the "locked" pantry was both cliched and stupid, plus insulting).

The ink on Lexi's divorce decree isn't even dry yet when she arrives back in her hometown to start over. Her grandmother, who apparently fails to understand that Lexi needs time to recover from the divorce, figure out where her marriage went wrong and that she needs to time heal, has opened an account in Lexi's name on an online dating service and set up a month's worth of dates. Lexi, we're meant to believe, is too shy and too honorable to cancel but feels obligated to honor her grandmother's fraudulent behavior. I think we're meant to think of Lexi as honorable and her grandmother as quirky but I just wanted to smack the both of them.

Then Lexi gets stuck, literally stuck in a window, and our  "here" Marco has several good laughs at her expense before condescending to help her. Again, what was meant to be cute and humorous was just stupid and annoying. They spar and flirt and soon he's knocking on her door. Marco has been attracted to Lexi for years, since they were teens, but she only had eyes for his best friend, Jeff. Now that Jeff and Lexi are divorced, Marco won't act on his attraction, not because Lexi needs time to get back on her feet but because there's some sort of man code that says he can't touch his friend's ex; apparently that's poaching. Really? I understand not poaching when Lexi and Jeff were married but they are divorced now and Jeff has already re-married. Is this really a guy thing or just a stupid plot device?

Lexi and Mark end up in a "fake" relationship *eye roll* Yeah, like we can't see how that's going to work out. Mark is still valiantly trying to hold to the code while also finding it difficult to stay away from Lexi. Lexi is attracted but doesn't believe that he could ever be attracted to her or make a commitment. Mark is also hesitant to tell Lexi about a business deal he's arranging with her ex that involves using her recipes, recipes she needs for the bistro she's trying to open. He knows he should tell her but he waits and of course she finds out in the worst possible way. Hey, it's a romance, there has to be a big misunderstanding! Because, you know, it's not enough that she's freshly divorced and insecure or that he has never been in a serious relationship. Oh, and naturally the ex is a total jerk with no redeeming value.

So, did I like anything? Yes. While some of the humor didn't appeal to me, there was some that did. While Marco first comes off as an arrogant, playboy jerk, when we get inside his head, we see he's really not so bad. He's trying to prove himself to his family who can't see him as the responsible, business-savvy man he's become; he loves his goofy dog; he tries to be a good friend to Jeff until he finally sees him for the jerk that he really is; he goes out of his way to help both Lexi and her grandmother. He's a decent guy with some flaws, a normal person. Lexi is also likable; she loves her grandmother; once past the initial hurt, she realizes her own part in the failure of her marriage; she's loyal to her family and friends; she learns to take risks. I also liked Adair's portrayal of the small town Lexi lives in; unlike many authors she gets it right and doesn't sugarcoat it. The sex scenes are hot; the romance, despite my complaints, is sweet, and reading the story was a pleasant way to spend several hours.

I didn't love "Summer in Napa" but it was pleasant and it did make smile as well as roll my eyes and grumble. If the blurb appeals to you, then I say read it. Although it's the second book in a series, I had no trouble reading it as a stand alone.

April's Reading Challenges Wrap Up

I'll put up a wrap up post every month or early the next month for all of my 2013 reading challenges. Some books, I posted reviews on the blog, some are on goodreads, there may be one or two without reviews, especially books I edit or that are put out by my publisher.

In March I participated in a TBR pile challenge hosted by the Caffeinated Book Reviewer; well this month, May, she's co-hosting the Clean Sweep ARC Challenge. The idea is to clear out as many review books as possible, whether or not they are actual ARCs. Most of the ones on my list are actual ARCs but there are a few non-ARC review books also. I'll post a separate wrap up post for that challenge at the end of the month.
