I'm reading an urban fantasy, "Kitty's Greatest Hits", by Carrie Vaughn; it collects short stories set in her Kitty Norville world that have been published elsewhere and two new stories. The quote is from page 56  in the hardcover.

Catherine knelt and began to pray, Pater Noster and Ave Maria, and her lips stumbled trying to get out all the words at once.

Blurb from goodreads:

Low Midnight spins out of the series on the wave of popularity surrounding Kitty's most popular supporting character, Cormac Bennett, a two-minded assassin of the paranormal who specializes in killing lycanthropes.

In his first solo adventure, Cormac, struggling with a foreign consciousness trapped inside him, investigates a century-old crime in a Colorado mining town which could be the key to translating a mysterious coded diary… a tome with secrets that could shatter Kitty's world and all who inhabit it.

With a framing sequence that features Kitty Norville herself, Low Midnight not only pushes the Kitty saga forward, but also illuminates Cormac's past and lays the groundwork for Kitty's future.

This quote made me laugh but it also nicely illustrates differences in time and culture. Cormac is a former monster hunter and an American who is currently teamed up with Amelia, the ghost of a female British magician. She died over a hundred years. My review will be up later this month at Romance at Random then next month here at the Nook.

You know, he thought to Amelia, nobody says spinster anymore.
Well, yes, certainly. Etymologically, the word was doomed, considering so few of the women called spinsters actually spun wool anymore. So what do people call unmarried adult women now?
Um. Women, he said.

Kitty Norville is back and in more trouble than ever.  Her recent run-in with werewolves traumatized by the horrors of war has made her start wondering how long the US government might have been covertly using werewolves in combat. Have any famous names in our own history might have actually been supernatural?  She's got suspicions about William Tecumseh Sherman.  Then an interview with the right vampire puts her on the trail of Wyatt Earp, vampire hunter.

But her investigations lead her to a clue about enigmatic vampire Roman and the mysterious Long Game played by vampires through the millennia.  That, plus a call for help from a powerful vampire ally in San Francisco, suddenly puts Kitty and her friends on the supernatural chessboard, pieces in dangerously active play.  And Kitty Norville is never content to be a pawn. . . .

Quote-Tastic #41 That's no dog, that's my husband!

Join us every Monday and share a favorite quote that's grabbed you for one reason or another. Everyone's welcome to join in - authors, bloggers, readers. The more the merrier! One of the challenges I'm doing this year is Finishing the Series, hosted by Socrates' Book Reviews. I've been so busy with review books that I've fallen behind on some series, including the Kitty Norville series by Carrie Vaughn. I got this one from the library and while I'm not living it, I am enjoying it. In this scene, Kitty is in human form, and has just met up with her husband Ben, who's in wolf form. Sun is a new acquaintance of Kitty's.

Sun watched us. I expected him to run screaming at the sight of the big slavering wolf. Most people would have. But he didn't flinch. Maybe he wasn't even surprised.
"That's a pretty big dog," Sun said.
"It's not a dog, it's my husband!"
"Huh. That's progressive."
"Shut up, he's a werewolf too."
"Yeah? Hi there." Sun waved.
