"Frost Fire" is a newly released YA paranormal romance by Olivia Rivers, the first in her Tortured Elements series. Olivia Rivers is a high school student, a literary agent intern, and an obsessive-compulsive reader. She has a slight obsession with Kootenai County in Idaho, and she’s pretty sure life will always be awesome as long as Irish accents exist. Excerpt

Seeing him was like reliving a perfect daydream and her worst nightmare at the same time. She didn’t know how to react. She didn’t know how to even think.
She knew Drake was the guy who’d tried to take her life. But somehow she couldn’t feel the right kind of fear toward him. She didn’t have that gut-wrenching, instinctual terror she’d felt toward Silas. Her fear for Drake was way more confusing, but she was slowly starting to decipher it:
She was afraid of learning the truth. Of finding out whether all those memories of him—of his comforting golden eyes and soft words—were real or not.
The thought threw off her footsteps, and she nearly missed the next step of the staircase. She slammed her foot down to regain balance. Her bad foot, of course. Because wasn’t that just her luck?
Pain ricocheted through her ankle, almost tearing a scream from her. But she held it back, biting her lip and only letting out a tiny whimper. Luke was going to have to look at her ankle and make sure it was only sprained, and not broken.
As if on cue, he appeared at the top of the stairs, his arms crossed and his expression turned down in a scowl. Allai read his expression and swallowed hard to keep her pounding heart in place. How could he have found out about Drake so quickly?
Allai gripped the banister, her nails digging into the smooth varnish. She had to tell him. She had to just blurt everything out and pretend she’d had no intention of keeping Drake’s predicament a secret.
“Allai,” Luke said quietly.
She hobbled up a few more steps and didn’t reply. She just focused on the plush carpet covering the steps, trying to dig her good foot into it to keep from slipping. All she had to do was open her mouth and say some simple words: Drake Rhaize is out by the border. Go catch him. It should have been easy.
But it wasn’t.

Book Blurb (from author):

“Magic is just like love, Allai. It won’t wait for permission before it destroys you.”

Like sand in an hourglass, Allai’s future is dwindling away. She’s spent her entire life fighting the Mages who threaten humanity, and dreams of someday eradicating magic. But all it takes is an anonymous phone call for the truth to spill out: Allai is the one thing she despises most.

She’s a Mage.

Though ancient law mandates Allai’s death, she still has one last chance of survival. His name is Drake Rhaize, and he swears he can lead Allai to a sanctuary for Mages. Allai hasn’t seen Drake in years, but she remembers him as the Demon boy who used to hold her close and softly whisper that he’d keep her safe. But Drake has changed since then: He’s now suspected of murder, and has been out-casted for betraying his own kind.

While Allai doesn’t trust Drake, she has no choice but to put her life in his hands and hope he can get her to safety. Because Allai’s father has hired a pack of Demons to bring her back to him, dead or alive–and Demons never stop the hunt.

Sex & Research the Jodi Redford Way: A Guest Post

Please welcome the disco-loving, demon-loving, peen-loving, irrepressible Jodi Redford back to the Nook today. At the ripe age of seven, Jodi Redford penned her first epic, complete with stick figure illustrations. She has won numerous contests, including The Golden Pen and Launching a Star. When not writing or working the day job, she enjoys gardening and way too many reality television shows.

*******************************************

I’ll let you in on a secret. Okay, it’s not particularly profound or life altering, but I’ll pretend it is for needless dramatic effect. *sucks in a deep, shuddering breath* Guest posts aren’t easy for me to write. *Waits for the cries of sympathy to subside* Here’s the thing. I can write a sixty thousand word novel without batting an eye, but when it comes to guest posts I’m usually left banging my head against the wall trying to think of something interesting. Or mildly entertaining. Let’s face it, there are only so many dissertations I can write on the mating habits of puffer fish. Tragic, I know. So when Bea mentioned my book research as a possible topic, I jumped on it like it was a Joe Manganiello impersonator at an all-male revue. Ahem. Not that I’ve ever done that before.

Now, between you and me, there’s a 99% chance Bea suggested research to me because she’s scouting out where to buy the sex swing from "Checking It Twice". I know how that crafty wench’s mind works. {Moi?} Also, it’s something I would do. Regardless, sharing my research would also further my quest to provide Bea with guest posts that elicit odd and appropriately perverted hits on her blog, so clearly this was a sign handed down from the heavens. {Or hell. It could be a sign of the apocalypse. I'm just sayin'. ~ Bea} So without further ado, I present to you …

JODI’S TOP FIVE SEXY RESEARCH ITEMS GUARANTEED TO GET ODD AND PERVERTED HITS ON BEA’S BOOK NOOK. WITH LINKS! (warning, the links lead to some very NSFW sites. Best to browse from the comfort of your home with no kiddos around and your non-maxed out charge card ready.)

1)      The infamous sex swing. That’s right. I don’t just use it for show in the warning for Checking It Twice. It’s actually in the book, folks. Because really, how much would that suck, expecting a sex swing and nada? When I promise a sex swing, I freakin’ deliver the goods. The awesome thing about this sex swing is that it spins. Gents, it’s like a merry-go-round for your penis! How awesome is that?!? Now ladies, I’ve got you covered too. Don’t have time to hit the gym? Then buy yourself the yoga sex swing. Your downward dog will have him howling!

2)      Erotic jewelry. As in a buzzing butterfly. Bzzz. Bzzzzzz. BZZZZZZZZZ!  The one used in Checking It Twice is mostly of my own creation, but this site has a few that come very close to it. There’s even a signet ring for his Johnson! That’s right, ladies. Make him feel special with some bling for his bologna. {Jodi is all about the bling; she has an awesome bling collection. However, most of it is not suitable for public viewing :P~ Bea}

3)      Edible lube. They don’t sell this stuff at Jiffy Lube. Trust me, I asked.  That 8 minute in and out promise they make? It’s an honest mistake, people. Yeesh. So anyway…Want to make his penis happy? Then get Happy Penis. Those cartoon penises on the label are smiling for a reason, you guys. Or maybe you prefer going vegan. Which is kinda contradictory, given the situation. *wink wink nudge nudge* Might I suggest some Good Clean Love? As opposed to dirty clean love, of course. Which I’m guessing would also be a contradiction. Unless you’re doing the deed at Jiffy Lube in a puddle of motor oil. Hey, whatever floats your boat. {shouldn't that be 'car'? lol ~ Bea}

4)      Candy Cane Flavored Body Paint. Make his pole feel like the North Pole! Sadly, this is another spun-mostly-from-my-own-brain creation. The closest similar product is the aptly named Candy Cane Emotion Lotion.  Doesn’t it have a catchy ring to it? I’ve even come up with a snazzy little jingle. “Come show your sweetie some devotion...with Candy Cane Emotion Lotion… She’ll surely be boastin’…that your bedroom moves be roastin’…while you stroke her to the stylin’s of Billy Ocean.”

It’s still a work in progress.   >.> {yes, yes it is, but points for trying ~ Bea}

5)      Jana’s Re-imagined Adult videos.  Riding Miss Daisy. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Strap On. Ah, time honored classics. Sadly there were a few that didn’t make the cut. Someday you will have your moment in the sun, Edward Penishands, and it will be even bigger than Lawrence of Her Labia. {BWAHAHAHA} *wipes tear from my eye*

So there you have it. An enlightening peek into some of the sexy research that goes into creating my books. It’s a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it.

Book Blurb (from author):
Tis the season for double seduction.
The only item on Jana Colton’s Christmas list this year is Kevin Monahan. Preferably naked in her bed. The delicious, hunky chef has been resisting her forever, but she’s pulling out all the sexy stops this holiday. Especially since his acceptance of an out-of-state job threatens to nix her quest to rock his boxers off.

Jana has always been Kevin’s personal Kryptonite, but giving in to her isn’t an option. Relationships are a four-letter word in his book. He cares far too much for Jana to let his emotional baggage ultimately break her heart. With the arrival of his best friend, Nick Pappas, the balance of temptation shifts. From their past history of sharing women, Nick knows every dirty trick it takes to lead Kevin astray, and he’s not afraid to use them. Particularly since Nick’s convinced that Jana is exactly what Kevin needs to be happy and whole.

Their game of seduction quickly snowballs into something that feels an awful lot like love—in triplicate.
But with Kevin dead set on leaving Michigan, there’s a real possibility it could be a blue Christmas for them all.
Product Warnings:
This book contains an extremely tormented voyeur, a very naughty and not so saintly Nick, a liberal application of candy cane-flavored body paint, a buzzing butterfly, and enough raunchy fun on a sex swing to melt a snowman…or two.

Book Blast: All I Want by Jolene Perry, Kaylee Baldwin & Rachael Anderson

"ALL I WANT"

THREE STORIES. THREE COUPLES. ONE HOLIDAY.

Pretty Near Perfect

by Jolene Perry

The last thing Norah needs is to be attracted to anyone – especially in her deceased fiancĂ©'s parents' home. Collin’s starting a new career, and has no business getting involved – especially while staying with his roommate’s family, who very kindly offered to take him in for the holidays. Unfortunately, you just don’t always pick the most convenient time and place to fall for someone.

Six Days of Christmas
by Kaylee Baldwin

When Natalie goes home with her best friend for Christmas, she expects plenty of quiet time to work on a winning ad so she can turn her dream internship into her dream job. Instead, she gets time-consuming Christmas festivities, a house full of children, and Jimmy, her best friend’s brother - someone who makes her question everything she’s always thought she wanted.

Twist of Fate
by Rachael Anderson

When a postcard meant for Kenzie winds up in Ty's mailbox, Ty's faced with a decision. Should he tell her that her fiancĂ© is breaking up with her and let it ruin her favorite holiday, or should he do what he’s wanted to do since he met her - make a move and hope that he can win her over before she discovers there won’t be a wedding after all.

Author Jolene Perry

Jolene Perry is an enigmatic figure. She is most often seen behind her laptop, staring at the words flying onto the screen with reckless abandon.

She survived growing up in rural Alaska, driving like a lunatic, and her husband’s careers in the military, as a perpetual student, and an Alaska State Prosecutor. She also survived as a middle school math teacher using her degree of Political Science and French.

One day Jolene was playing her guitar (probably some-thing juvenile for her kids) when she wondered what it would be like to write a song for a rockstar, and her first book was born. (that book is shelved)

She now lives a very glamorous life as a stay at home mom, elbow deep in dirty dishes and peanut butter sandwiches. She doesn’t even attempt to keep up with the laundry because non-writing time is precious, and her family is sorta awesome.

Rachael Anderson is the author of four contemporary romances: Divinely Designed, Luck of the Draw, Minor Adjustments, and The Reluctant Bachelorette. She's the mother of four, can't sing, doesn't dance, and despises tragedies. But she recently figured out how yeast works and can now make homemade bread, which she is really good at eating.

Blog Tour Giveaway & Review of The Burning of Isobel Key by Jen McConnel

Publisher: BrightFish Press
Format Read: Kindle edition
Release Date: September 14, 2012
Buying Links:  Amazon   Barnes & Noble

Book Blurb (from goodreads):
When Lou travels to Scotland, she’s a mess. She’s twenty-six, unemployed, and unsure of herself. It doesn’t help that she’s traveling with Tammy, her best friend, who is everything Lou is not.
At first, the trip pushes Lou towards the brink of depression, but then she meets Brian, a handsome local tour guide. When Brian tells the tourists about the countless witches burned in Scotland, Lou starts to listen. And when she discovers information about Isobel Key, one of the victims of the seventeenth century, Lou finds renewed purpose.

She sets out to learn the truth of the condemned witch, but she isn’t prepared for the knowledge that waits for her. Lou must face her demons if she has any hope of righting the wrongs of the past.

Quote:
Their memories were as short as the day, from the morning after her terrible deeds were revealed and the witch was brought into town bound in the back of the pony cart. It was suddenly as if none of the villagers knew the poor creature at all. None could recall seeking her help, and none would avow that she had always been kind and ready to bake breads for town feasts or to watch the little ones play while their parents danced together. Kindness lingers less than murder, for it was obvious to all that the woman had murdered at least three souls, if not countless others.  Justice was being served, and her blood would not stain the god fearing hands in St. Andrews. She was not their responsibility, and they wanted to take no claim for her evil.
Reviewed By: Bea

Bea's Thoughts:

I enjoyed Isobel's story very much; I've always had a fascination for the history of witches and Europe, like the US, hunted down women, and some women, who were accused of witchcraft. Often, the guilty were social outcasts, had something that their accuser wanted or had knowledge, such as herbalry and midwifery, that was sometimes looked on suspiciously. The character of Isobel is a midwife and healer and when tragedy strikes, her grief starts her down a path that results in her being charged as a witch. Isobel was engaging and her story was fascinating, even knowing how her story ends.

I was less engaged in Lou's story. Maybe it's been too long since I was that young and that unsure of myself but I had a hard time relating to her. Although, her critical mother reminded me very much of my stepmother; they both mean well but have difficulty showing their love in non-critical ways. I did like that Lou changed and grew during the book; she grew a spine and became more confident. I also appreciated that McConnel didn't rush the romance between Lou and the tour guide, Brian. It developed slowly and realistically.

The story is a fast read despite its length and I didn't at all mind the back and forth between the past and the present and between Isobel and Lou's perspectives. The author is working on a sequel, presumably starring Lou, and Brian so if you read and enjoy this, you shouldn't have long to wait for the next one.

I received a PDF from RABT for review.

Marissa is blessed with a wonderful supportive husband, Thomas. He is her other half and allows her to stay home and pursue her writing. He puts up with all her quirks and listens to her brainstorm in the middle of the night?

Her writing buddies Max (a cocker spaniel) and Dawne (a beagle mix) are always around to listen to her bounce ideas off them. They might not be able to answer, but they are helpful in their own ways.

Spotlight On Housetrap by R.J. Hore

The blurb for this sounded interesting and I knew I had to participate in the promo blitz for it. It mixes two of my favorite genres, urban fantasy and mystery. The book was released on December third, so if you like the excerpt below, you can go and purchase it.

The author,R.J. Hore was a reader of genre fiction since a very early age. He got down to serious attempts at writing over thirty years ago, although employment kept getting in the way. He did write a considerable amount of non-fiction during his business career, enough to be listed as a professional writer by the Canadian Authors Association.

His hobbies include trying to keep on the good side of his wife, keeping track of his children and grandchildren, and wrestling the blasted cat off of his keyboard. In his diminishing spare time he sails on Lake Winnipeg and try not to get lost.

He currently reviews science fiction and fantasy genre novels and anthologies for an on-line magazine aimed primarily at school libraries. He's losing track, but has done somewhere over 60 reviews so far.

 Excerpt

Faith tongued my ear and moved on, leaving me quite damp. I don’t know what some parents think about raising children, but Grizzly’s methods leave something to be seriously reviewed by the Committee of Public Knowledge and Enlightenment. A young lady should definitely not be brought up and educated in an all-night snack and beverage emporium. And she should at the least learn to respect her elders. I dragged my tired carcass onto a pair of flat feet and headed for the exit sign.

The rain had stopped but the early morning air remained chill. I often thought things out clearest while strolling during these purple-grey hours before the sun cleared the buildings. My own little rooms were only blocks away. After the first block I knew I was being followed.

The empty street stretched out ahead, a long mist-clad tunnel of dark shadows and faint gaslight. One or two of the street lamps in the next block had already burned out, leaving gaps of pure blackness not yet touched by the yawning whisper of the dawn. There were at least two of them trailing behind me; I could tell that much by the muffled footsteps. Which two, and why they were not bothering to hide their approach, I could only guess at. But if I were a gambler, I’d wager Bertha’s next pay cheque that they had some connection with our little lost love, dear Rupert. Passing through the pale ring of light on the sidewalk cast by the next lamp, I paused, slipping my left hand into the glass knuckles in my coat pocket, and casually turned around so that my followers would be caught in the glow.

“Good evening gentlemen, taking an early morning stroll? I don’t believe I've seen you in the neighbourhood before.”

The Vampire smiled, fixing his sunken black eyes upon me. The more elderly and taller partner of the pair, he stood motionless, long grasping hands dangling out from the sleeves of his greatcoat, thin fingers twitching. The Demon shimmered silently beside him, the light sparkling on his green scales. Shorter and stockier than his cadaverous companion, he licked his lips.

The bloodsucker spoke first, in a voice that echoed as a cross somewhere between coarse sandpaper and an untuned fiddle. “I believe you know a close acquaintance of ours, a young Master Rupert? We are searching for him.”

“Don't know the lad, I’m afraid.” I recognized the tall Ghoul’s accent though.

The Vampire drifted to the nearer edge of the dim circle of light. The Demon faded toward my right and the deserted street. I loosened the splatter gun with a slight move of my shoulder.

“Oh dear, we just want to speak with the boy. What can you tell us of his whereabouts?”

Not only was this parasite on the ripe side of the last century, but he had a set of bad teeth and nasty breath I could smell from ten feet away.
