A Month of Giving Thanks: Day 3

Berl at Fantasy Is More Fun and Michelle at Because Reading Is Better Than Real Life are hosting a month long blog event for giving thanks. The idea is to blog about people, things, or events that we are thankful for. I probably won't post every day; I'm aiming instead for a few times a week.

If you want to participate, you still can; just click on one of the links above. You can post every day, once a week, several times a week, whatever schedule works for you. There will be a linky post every day at the to host blogs so you can link up your post.

Today is for CarolKat. CarolKat is not a regular contributor to the Nook but she posts romance reviews from time to time and has for the past year or so. Unlike the bloggers you met the past few days, we did not meet at Kelley's board. Nope. Instead we met at Patricia Briggs' message board. :D What can I say, author message boards are a great place to meet folks who share similar interests. :)

Unlike the bloggers I introduced you to past couple days, CarolKat and I have actually met. The first time was when we flew all the way out to Seattle Washington to go camping with Patty Briggs, her husband Mike, and about a dozen or so board members. It was a fantastic weekend (yes I flew across country to go camping for a weekend. :D). Since then CarolKat and I, who live about 4 hours from each other, have gotten together to attend a writers conference and we are talking about getting together again.

These days CarolKat, besides being busy with work and grandkids, is busy with her own blog, Carol Kittie Reviews. Her focus is on romance, the hotter the better. Stop by, say hi, and give her some love.

  1. I am incredibly jealous of these author boards that I missed out on! Patricia Briggs is one of my first favorites - I actually just struck up a conversation with the DMV lady TODAY because I saw Moon Called sitting on her desk and couldn't say nothing :D Do I understand correctly that y'all went camping with Patricia Briggs? Because JEALOUS!

I'm going to go check out CarolKat, goodness knows I like my steamy romance!

    1. Patty's board is still going, it's not defunct - http://www.hurog.com/forum/index.php

Yep, we got to go camping with Patty. It was a fun weekend but too short. However, there's another camping trip in May of 2015 - http://www.hurog.com/forum/index.php?topic=7739.0

It's such fun to start up convos with strangers when you spot a book they're reading that you love. Go forth and prosletyze! :D

    1. Heh, I minimized nature by sleeping in a yurt and not a tent. :D But a tent would have been worth it if that had been the only choice.

I'm lucky that CarolKat lives close enough for us to hook up now and then. :)

    1. Many have become defunct and others have quieted down thanks to all of the social media options but in their heyday, they were awesome.

    1. Oh, you've been missing out! But I wasn't sure how to explain them so here's Wikipedia's definition: An Internet forum, or message board, is an online discussion site where people can hold conversations in the form of posted messages.[1] They differ from chat rooms in that messages are often longer than one line of text, and are at least temporarily archived. Also, depending on the access level of a user or the forum set-up, a posted message might need to be approved by a moderator before it becomes visible.

Forums have a specific set of jargon associated with them; e.g. a single conversation is called a "thread", or topic.

A discussion forum is hierarchical or tree-like in structure: a forum can contain a number of subforums, each of which may have several topics. Within a forum's topic, each new discussion started is called a thread, and can be replied to by as many people as so wish.

Many authors have them or had them in the past: Kelley, Patricia Briggs, Seanan McGuire, Karen Marie Moning, JR Ward, Laurell K Hamilton, etc.

As I mentioned in earlier comment, message boars have been dying out, but they were hot for a few years and a great place to chat.
