Blurb from goodreads:
Twelve-year-old Artemis Fowl is a millionaire, a genius—and, above all, a criminal mastermind. But even Artemis doesn't know what he's taken on when he kidnaps a fairy, Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon Unit. These aren't the fairies of bedtime stories—they're dangerous! Full of unexpected twists and turns, Artemis Fowl is a riveting, magical adventure.

Jax's thoughts:

A preteen anti-villain. I like the thought. Despite that, it did take me a bit to get into this book. The description talks about fairies, but the books starts out in a very non-fantasy manner. It through me for a loop, and I didn't get my bearings until the 4th chapter. At that point the mob-like nature of Fowl's antics mixed enough with the witty twist on fairies to get me hooked.

Artemis is a brilliant boy, one who in many ways defies what it means to be a kid. There are brief peeks that he craves what every child needs: his parents. Whatever shady business he gets involved in, his goals are ultimately to find/save them.

I would recommend this book (and series) to boys or girls, especially ones who enjoy a bit of mythology with their action adventures.
