Children's Book Week Review of Loki's Wolves by K.L Armstrong and M.A. Marr

Publisher: Little, Brown
Series: The Blackwell Pages #1
Format: Hardcover
Source: I own it.
Release Date: May 7, 2013
Buying Links: Amazon  Barnes & Noble  The Book Depository

Blurb from goodreads:
In Viking times, Norse myths predicted the end of the world, an event called Ragnarok, that only the gods can stop. When this apocalypse happens, the gods must battle the monsters--wolves the size of the sun, serpents that span the seabeds, all bent on destroying the world.

The gods died a long time ago.

Matt Thorsen knows every Norse myth, saga, and god as if it was family history--because it is family history. Most people in the modern-day town of Blackwell, South Dakota, in fact, are direct descendants of either Thor or Loki, including Matt's classmates Fen and Laurie Brekke.

However, knowing the legends and completely believing them are two different things. When the rune readers reveal that Ragnarok is coming and kids--led by Matt--will stand in for the gods in the final battle, he can hardly believe it. Matt, Laurie, and Fen's lives will never be the same as they race to put together an unstoppable team to prevent the end of the world.
Bea's Thoughts:

Well, it's no secret I'm a Kelley fan. I've read just about everything she has ever published, regardless of genre. I haven't read anything by Melissa Marr but Kelley's name was enough to grab me; add in Norse mythology and I was sold. But...middle grade? I don't read it very often and much of it makes me want to gouge my eyes out. But, it's Kelley and it's mythology and it's a mythology that hasn't been done to death already. So, I ordered my copy.

The authors didn't let me down. Armstrong and Marr wrote a fantastic adventure story full of heartbreak, betrayal, growing up, and learning to trust; trust yourself, trust your instincts, trust each other. The main kids, Matt, Laurie and Fen feel real but aren't obnoxious and the others they pick up along the way, Baldwin, twins Ray and Reyna, and Astrid, are also realistic. It's a struggle for everyone to learn to trust each other and to work together. Matt naturally steps into the role of leader but it's a role he struggles with as he lacks confidence in his ability to lead and to stop Ragnarok and of course he makes mistakes along the way.

If you're not up on Norse mythology, or if like me it's been years since you read any, don't worry, the authors weave it naturally into the story. If you find it piques your interest, try out Kevin Hearne's adult urban fantasy series, the Iron Druid Chronicles where he mixes Norse, Celtic and other mythologies.

The story is not all angst; there's lots of action as Matt, Laurie and Fen leave home to find their remaining companions, encounter adults who don't understand, trolls who want treasure, etc. They not only have to find their other companions but acquire certain objects and pass a test before they can actually stop Ragnarok. There's only two books left and still a lot of ground to cover. Will they be successful? Will Matt and the others save the world? Will they survive the process? Will I survive waiting a year for the next book? "Loki's Wolves" is a wonderful, engrossing tale smartly moves Norse mythology into the modern world. Go get a copy now!

Bea's Thoughts:

Last month I reviewed Tara's fiction book, "I'll Follow the Moon", about a newborn sea turtle who hatches, and goes to the ocean in search of his mother. It has been a best seller for Tara and may be the book she's best known for. Tara also believes strongly in conservation so she undertook to create a non-fiction book about sea turtles for children. While "I'll Follow The Moon" is aimed at toddlers and preschoolers this book is more for school-age children.

Tara educates and entertains her readers in this generously illustrated book. There are photographs on almost every page. The photos illustrate the different varieties of sea turtles, their habits, their risks and the people who help them. Tara gives background on each species of sea turtle, discusses what challenges they face, what people are doing to help, and what the readers can do to help. Tara offers many suggestions for action, from the simple such as turning off lights when not in use to more complicated actions such as volunteering with a rescue organization or becoming a politician or scientist. Her tone is chatty, sometimes too much so, but it's friendly and conversational. At times it veered on patronizing but I think most children will enjoy her style.

The book is available in both ebook and print versions and the text contains links that ebook readers can click for more information. I would have liked an index at the book of all the links and sites referenced for the print readers and even the ebook readers. She does have a bibliography of suggested reading, as well as a list of practical suggestions on how to help and a glossary. At the bottom of each page in the corner are little pictures that when you flip the pages quickly give you a little story in motion. The artwork and the photographs are lovely and add to the book.

The Turtle Book is well-researched, easy to read and logically laid out for both easy reading and quickly looking something up. I recommend it to anyone with an interest in turtles or conservation. I donated my print review copy to my school's library.

That gorgeous poster was designed by Brian Selznick, Caldecott winner, 2012 Children's Choice Book Awards Illustrator of the Year, and creator of The Invention of Hugo Cabret and Wonderstruck. He created it for Children's Book Week, the longest-running national literacy initiative in the country. Each year events are held throughout the US in libraries, bookstores, and schools, or anywhere young children and books can come together. The idea is to celebrate books for young readers and the joy of reading.

If you're reading this blog, you already know about the joy of reading. Maybe you can help share it. See if there are events in your area: Official Events  Local Events  Talk to your local school, library or bookstore and see if they would be willing to set up an event and then offer to help. See that beautiful poster above? It's available for FREE. Go here to read how to get it. There's also a free bookmark that you can download here. Are there any children in your life? Give them a book, one you loved as a child or one you think they will love; maybe give them a gift card to a bookstore, take them to the library, help them get a library card if they don't have one, read a book with them. Share the love of reading and encourage literacy.

I'll be reviewing one children's book a day every day during Children's Book Week. Some I own, some belong to the school where I teach, and some I received for review. I'll start and end the week reviewing books by Stephanie Lisa Tara; she donated several books to my school a few months ago and I'll likely pass on these review copies to my school.

Loki's Wolves by K.L. Armstrong & M.A. Marr
Champion? Really? No, really? I'm not ven in high school yet, and they expect me to fight some giant serpent and save the world?

This isn't just some boxing experiment. It's the world.

Matt didn't quite get how that worked. Kill the serpent; save the world. That's how it was supposed to go. In the myth of Ragnarok, the gods faced off against the monsters. If they defeated the monsters, the world would continue as it was. If  the monsters won, they'd take over. If both sides died-as they did in the myths predicting Ragnarok-the world would be plunged into an ice age.

What if the stories are real?

But if the stories aren't real, then Thor isn't real. ha amulet around your neck isn't real. Your power isn't real

Except it obviously was. Which meant...

Even thinking about that made Matt's stomach churn and his head hurt and his feet ache to run home. Just race home and jump in bed and pull up the covers and hide. Puke and hide: the strategy of champions.

GOD BLESS EVERYONE WHO HAS SUPPORTED THE CAUSE TO SAVE SEA TURTLES FROM EXTINCTION!

I've always believed that magic hides in special places. As a child, people would often stare at my bright red hair, which was very, very bright indeed.

Unfortunately, I developed a bad habit of making up rhymes about all of them, and they soon became funny characters. I didn't have much time to think about being different; fanciful lyricisms danced in my head, and no one was safe!

Since then, I've come to believe that storytelling has the power to inspire a deep love of language and learning. Words tripping off the tongue in somersaults that stick to your thoughts like taffy-- those are the things that stay forever in the mind.

I've lived in many special places: on a farm, in a city skyscraper, on a tropical beach, and in the beautiful country of France. Now I live in northern California, between the redwood forests and the sea. Even though I'm an adult, I'm still as silly as ever.

Many nice words have been used to describe my books, such as fun, engaging, delightful, and whimsical. Some folks say that I deliver timeless messages of love for kids and parents to share again and again; this makes me very happy. I hope that you'll enjoy my stories, too. Captivating children with language is something that I believe in, and I strive to live my life with this always.

The Week In Review

Giveaways:

Clean Sweep ARC Challenge: I had a slower week this week. I read several books but only two that counted for the challenge and one of them took me several days; Playing Hooky and Targets of Revenge.

Odd and interesting phrases that led to the blog: "how to catch a cat" remains popular  as does "and seclusion" :D; various wordings of "Nora Roberts releases" are also popular and there was a search for a book that I've never heard, "Reboot" by Amy Tintera. I've no idea why that led to my blog.

Coming Up This Week

It's Children's Book Week starting Monday the 13th and running through the 20th. I'll be reviewing a children's book every day and I'm also participating in a blog hop. Check back tomorrow to enter the giveaway.

Bea's Ranty Review of Targets of Revenge by Jeffrey S. Stephens

Publisher: Gallery Books
Series: Jordan Sandor #2
Format Read: Print book
Source: I received both a print ARC and a finished hardcover free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Release Date: February 19, 2013
Buying Links: Amazon  Barnes & Noble  The Book Depository

Blurb from goodreads:
COUNTRY FIRST. All the bureaucratic scolding in Washington cannot stop resourceful CIA Agent Jordan Sandor when he’s hungry for revenge. This time he’s on the hunt for the cold-blooded sociopath known as Adina, whose indiscriminate slaughter of innocent people, including Sandor’s close friend, represents man at his worst.
Mobilizing a team of skilled and dedicated agents to carry out his secret operation, Sandor flies in the face of his superiors’ stern warnings—ultimately crash-landing in the heart of the Venezuelan jungle. Armed with little more than a combat knife and a deadly automatic weapon, he infiltrates Adina’s camp and discovers that the ruthless terrorist is smuggling not only cocaine into the United States, but also a deadly substance that could cost tens of thousands of lives.
Sandor develops intel that leads him to Egypt and then Moscow as he fights to prevent this disaster, but after he lands on Interpol’s list of international fugitives, the truth becomes clear: Adina’s evil web extends to the far corners of the globe. Meanwhile, someone Sandor trusts could very well be feeding the agent dangerous lies as he struggles to stay on Adina’s trail.

More focused than ever, Sandor refuses to end his perilous mission, even after he has been taken captive. In the end, when he uncovers the realities of Adina’s deranged plan for a catastrophic assault on New York City, Sandor has no choice but to risk his life to protect his country’s safety and freedom.

Bea's Thoughts:

In 2011, I read and reviewed the first book in this series, "Targets of Opportunity". Looking back at my review, I didn't love the book but it had some good parts. I didn't like the hero, Sandor, and I wish I had re-read my review before agreeing to review this one when the publisher contacted me. I said in that review that "Sandor is more of a cardboard thriller hero - rogue and rule breaker, check; ladies man, check; only man who can save the world, check; a loner, check; a true blue American patriot who sees the world in only black and white." That's still true and Stephens has ramped it up in this book to the point that Sandor is a caricature. He has no depth or complexity but is a cartoon; he is also self-righteous, arrogant, and condescending, and I don't find any of those qualities attractive. Moreover, the politics and morals that Stephens has Sandor espouse are simplistic, condescending, and jingoistic. Sandor is the kind of patriot who makes patriotism into a dirty word. I don't remember him being so obnoxious in the first book and I don't think I've changed drastically in a year and a half but this book just made me want to pull my hair out.

Moreover, Sandor is not any better than the villain, Adina, who is making a return appearance from the first book. Both believe that they are right; both believe the ends justify the means; both have no qualms about breaking laws, torturing people or committing murder; both are utterly intolerant of people whose beliefs differ from theirs; and both refuse to answer to anyone else. The storyline is simplistic and the politics made me rant while reading; there were times I wanted to throw the book across the room but I didn't want to scare the cat or break the window.

"Targets of Revenge" is an action/adventure and it fits solidly into the genre. Ignoring for a moment the many things that infuriated me, the book is decently written, if you're willing to forgo characterization. There are no gaping plot holes, the editing is adequate, and the story moves pretty quickly. There aren't any real twists or turns and I thought the storyline was less plausible than in the first book. If you are looking for something where you can turn your brain off and enjoy reading "Rah rah, America can do no wrong" books, you might like this one.

Now, let's go back to Sandor's utter lack of appeal as a hero, and I don't think he's a hero even if he does succeed in his mission. I do prefer my heroes/protagonists to be at least somewhat likable or relatable. BUT, if the author takes that unlikable character and digs deep, takes the reader inside the mind of the character so we get to know and understand him, then I can accept a less likable hero/protagonist. I may even find I come to like him. If this had been written as a psychological thriller, an examination of the differences, if any, between the hero and the villain, it might have been a good book. But what we get is a fairly standard political thriller with a particularly unlikable hero.

I rarely hate a book but this one....well, it's the second time I've tried this author. I'm done now. He won't get a third chance. The older I get, the more willing I am to DNF a book. However, I agreed to review it for the publisher so I made myself finish it. I am very glad I didn't pay for it; it's bad enough I spent time on it.
I know I shouldn't confuse the author with his characters but I admit to not feeling very friendly towards Stephens after reading this book. Whether or not there's any of Stephens in Sandor, I simply can't accept the BS that gets dished out in this book. I don't like Sandor's morals or behavior; I can't stand the politics espoused (you're poor because you don't work hard enough; the government has no responsibility to you and you deserve no help whatsoever, etc.); the main character Sandor is an obnoxious ass; and given that there's very little difference between Sandor and Adina, the main thing that makes Sandor the hero is that he is an American and Adina is not. Having tried two of these books now, I'm done. They simply are not for me.

The publisher sent me paperbacks of the book one and the sequel and both an ARC and finished hardcover of this book. I will be donating them to my local library. I was going to do a giveaway but it always feel wrong when I hold a giveaway for a book I disliked; "here, I didn't like this book so I want you to have it." :D At least my library can add them to their collection or sell them at their next used book sale and earn some money from them.

Now that I've ranted about the book, check out the trailer below for a completely different take on it. Since it's the book's trailer, basically an advertisement, you'll hear how wonderful the book is. *rolls eyes*

If you have read the book, or you end up reading it, please share your thoughts below. I saw that it has many 3, 4 and 5 star reviews on goodreads. I'm convinced I read a different book. :D Do you like it? Why or why not?
