Blurb from goodreads:

When mommy is away, it’s up to daddy to do his daughter’s hair in this ode to self-confidence and the love between fathers and daughters from former NFL wide receiver Matthew A. Cherry and New York Times bestseller Vashti Harrison.

Zuri’s hair has a mind of its own. It kinks, coils, and curls every which way. Zuri knows it’s beautiful. When mommy does Zuri’s hair, she feels like a superhero. But when mommy is away, it’s up to daddy to step in! And even though daddy has a lot to learn, he LOVES his Zuri. And he’ll do anything to make her—and her hair—happy.

Tender and empowering, Hair Love is an ode to loving your natural hair—and a celebration of daddies and daughters everywhere.

My Thoughts:

"Hair Love" is absolutely darling. It's full of joy and love and tenderness.

Zuri likes her hair, her hair that

"has a mind of its own. It kinks, coils, and curls every which way."

No hair hate here. Zuri loves her hair, its texture and versatility. Normally, she and her mother style her hair. But today is a special day, mom is not around, and daddy is having trouble. The man tries, give him credit. They look at ideas online and try different styles but nothing is right. The hair styles are not awful; they just aren't right for the occasion. It has to be PERFECT. Daddy loves his little girl and does his best to make her happy. They keep trying and eventually achieve perfection.

"Hair Love" was sweet, heart-warming, full of love between daughter and father, and overflowing with confidence and self-acceptance. The story was delightful and I smiled all the way through it. The artwork is gorgeous and full of detail. I read this to my class a few times and they enjoyed it. This is a keeper.

The book was made into a  short animated film which won an Academy Award. It is every bit as sweet and adorable as the book. See the film here on YouTube.

  1. I saw the short film around Academy time and fell in love. I watched it over and over and teared up every single time. Such a wonderful story.

  2. I heard a lot about the book and film but hadn't seen the film until I read the book and went looking for it. They are both so lovely.
