Inspired by The Geeky Blogger's Book Blog, and the now defunct Fantasy Is More Fun, I decided a few years ago to track my book expenses. I'll do a wrap up post at the end of each month.
I've given myself $40 real money each month to spend on books for myself, $40 for professional books - classroom use, professional growth, and editing, $30 a month for books that are gifts, and $10 a month for blog giveaways. "Real money" being cash from my bank account as opposed to gift cards and store credits. Books that I borrowed from the library or a friend, and books received for review do not count against my purchases though I'll track them here as books acquired. Personal funds not spent will be added to the next month and any overages will be deducted from the next month; gift and blog cash however will reset each month.

**************
So, I blew my May budget and much of it in the first week. Blew it up, to the moon. Sigh. There were a couple of pre-orders I'd forgotten about and my school had a Scholastic book fair. In addition, late in the month I succumbed to an Amazon deal where you bought $20 worth of ebooks within a 1 week period and you got a $5 ebook credit. I've already spent the credit. :D
I bought three books at the book fair and used up my entire May budget right there. As a result, I did something I should have done years ago and split my book budget into two, one for personal use and one for professional use. I still went over and I will need to be really good in June. I went ahead and added the professional budget to this month's accounting. As stated in the intro, that one includes books I purchase for editing, for use in my classroom, and for my professional growth.
How was your book buying month? Did you get anything exciting?

It's so fun to get a peek at another booklover's buy list and also their budget. I confess, I can easily overspend on books if I'm not careful!
ReplyDeleteIt is so very easy to overspend! This helps me be accountable.
