In the New Republic, every woman must marry five men. It’s the law. Welcome to the apocalypse.
Shay came into the township knowing she’d be a lottery bride. So she’d have to marry five men. She wasn’t the naïve girl she’d been eight years ago. She’d learned the lessons that had been beaten into her and she’d learned them well. So yes, so she’d share her body with her new husbands. But her secrets were still her own.
The men are different than she expected, though. They each had their own reasons for entering the lottery. There’s Charlie, who’s so sweet and kind. Rafe, who’s a light-hearted jokester during the day but dark and demanding in bed. Then Jonas and Henry and Gabriel, each bringing their own damage and beauty to the clan until, day by day, they begin to feel like a real family.
There’s just one little problem with the happy new family clan.
One of them isn’t who he appears to be. He is a spy for the enemy. Will Shay and the township be doomed before she and her husbands have a chance at lasting happiness?
Please note that this book contains some dark elements and covers sensitive topics. Any reader that feels they shouldn't venture into this apocalyptic world of sometimes harsh realities should please consider before reading.
I've been out of the loop for awhile. Truth is I have been suffering from some severe depression and have not felt like doing much of anything much less reading. I am currently on an up swing and feeling better. The other night I was surfing Facebook and this book popped up. It looked interesting and since it was only .99, I figured why not. This was the first book I have actually been able to sit down and read in while.
Honestly, I have some mixed feelings about the book. I LOVED the story. The whole idea is pretty interesting and I enjoyed the idea of it. The author has taken the time to actually develop a pretty good world. I did not realize at the time I purchased this book that it was actually the second in the series but it did not hurt my understanding anything about the story.
I liked Shay. She is a complicated female character. She has been through hell since the world fell apart but she is still capable of feeling. She has a hard time trusting people, especially men but seeing as what she has been through it is pretty understandable. There is a bit of a surprise that pops up in the book but once you know her story, you understand her and why she is doing what she is
The author lets you see the story not only from Shay's point of view but also through her husbands'. I liked being able to see what is going on inside their heads because it actually made me like a couple of them. Before getting into their minds, I was not a fan of a couple of Henry or Jonas. I thought Henry was just a jerk and Jonas cared more about his weed than anything else.
I know what you are thinking "If she liked the characters and the story what does she have mixed feelings about?". The answer to that is the sex scenes. I've read some pretty racy stuff and liked them but this went a little over the top for me. I actually felt a little uncomfortable during a couple of the scenes and thought a couple more were just plain unbelievable.
Will I read more of the books in the series? I might. For .99, you get a full complete story. This one was 307 pages which is great for a .99 book. I like the whole premise and I like the characters. I might just skip over some of the sex scenes in the next one. Do I want five husbands? Not unless one of them will mow the lawn without being nagged.
