Today I have an interview with Gia , owner of the All Day Breakfast Cafe. She left New York and moved to Florida to open a cafe. Unfortunately, her ex-husband followed her to Florida and ended up dead in her dumpster. She took a few minutes to sit down and answer some questions.
Gia's creator, Lena Gregory, lives in a small town on the south shore of eastern Long Island with her husband and three children. When she was growing up, she spent many lazy afternoons on the beach, in the yard, anywhere she could find to curl up with a good book. She loves reading as much now as she did then, but she now enjoys the added pleasure of creating her own stories.

Hi Gia, thanks for
taking a few minutes to sit and speak with me. *sips some coffee* This is
delicious. So, you moved to Florida from New York city after your divorce and
opened a café. You worked in a deli in New York city. But was this something
you always wanted, a restaurant of your own? Or did you have a different dream?
Thank you! I’m glad
you like it. I did work in a deli in New York City for many years, and I always
dreamed of owning a café of my own, but I never dreamed it would be in Florida.
I can’t say I ever really contemplated leaving New York before my divorce.
How did you and your
ex meet? Was it love at first sight?
When I first met
Bradley, he was a regular customer in the deli where I worked. At first, he’d
come in and flirt, hang around after his order was ready, that kind of stuff.
It took me a little while to realized he was interested in something more than
some friendly flirting. But when I did fall for Bradley, I fell hard. Looking
back, I probably should have taken more time to get to know him, the real him,
not the man he portrayed himself to be.
Related to that, do
you think you might get married again? Or is too soon to say? There seemed to
be sparks between you and Hunter and Trevor seemed interested in you.
Hunter and Trevor are
both amazing, but I don’t think I’m ready for anything yet. After everything
that went on with my ex, a man I trusted with all my heart, I don’t know if
I’ll ever trust anyone again. And I can’t be with someone I can’t trust, so…
I’d like to think someday I’ll feel differently.
You responded with
warmth and generosity to Harley, a homeless man. I think it’s wonderful of you,
but I wonder if you’ll run afoul of bylaws or community sentiment, as some
places discourage the kind of assistance you provided. What are your thoughts
on that?
Luckily, I don’t
expect that to be a problem, since most of Boggy Creek’s business owners seem
to care for Harley, but even if it was, I’d never turn my back on him. Harley’s
a friend.
Touching back on my
first question a bit. You left New York, you’re making a new life for yourself,
have your dreams or goals changed? Where do you see yourself in say five years?
That is such a hard
question to answer. Every day I feel differently. Florida is so much different
from New York, and sometimes it’s amazing. Other times, I feel like an
outsider, like I’ll never fit in, you know? I keep a mental check list of all
the good and bad things about living in Florida and New York. So far, the good and
the bad seem to weigh in pretty evenly. In five years, I’d love to think I’ll
be a successful café owner in the small town of Boggy Creek, Florida, but there
are definitely a few things I’ll have to get used to first.
Thank you, Gia. I
appreciate your time and the food was wonderful.
Thank you so much.
It’s been a pleasure speaking with you, and I hope you’ll come again.
