Blurb from goodreads:

Dr. Kay Scarpetta is about to head to Miami for a vacation when she notices seven pennies on a wall behind their home. Is this a kids' game? If so, why are all of the coins dated 1981 and so shiny they could be newly minted? Then she learns there's been a homicide five minutes away. A high school teacher was shot with uncanny precision as he unloaded groceries from his car.

Yet no one heard or saw a thing.

Soon more victims surface. The shots seem impossible to achieve, yet they are so perfect they cause death in an instant. There is no pattern to indicate where the killer will strike next. First it was New Jersey, then Massachusetts, and then the murky depths off the coast. There she comes face to face with shocking news that implicates her niece, Lucy—Scarpetta's own flesh and blood.

Steph's Thoughts:

It has been a while since I have read a book by Patricia Cornwall. I have several in my leaning tower of a TBR pile. I was pleasantly surprised to have this one come up for review. Even though I have missed a few books, it was pretty easy to pick up what was going on in Scarpetta's life. It did take me a few chapters to be able to get into Cornwell's style of writing again but once I did, I enjoyed the book. There is a huge mystery and lots of bodies and that means forensics.

The one thing that always attracted me to the author was the combination of science and mystery. Her books are always full of information on how forensics are used to solve mysteries. This one is no different, there is a lot of science thrown at you. Some people might not like this but I enjoyed the information, the science and the mystery but there is a cliffhanger ending. Not much is wrapped up at the end of the book and I was disappointed to see one of my favorite authors fall into the latest fad of cliffhanger endings. Will I read the next book? Probably. However, I am begging Patricia Cornwell to not do another cliffhanger ending.

  2. I'm a fan of science and mystery, too. The "cliffhanger" ending, however, concerns me a bit. Hope it is just a one-off.
