Excerpt From The Vampire, The Witch & The Werewolf: Mirabella’s Mardi Gras Ménage by Louisa Bacio

Today's story is not a romantic suspense but a paranormal romance. I know, I know, you were probably expecting the former but I decided to mix things up a little, and it is still a romance. :)

“What are you doing living here?” she asked.

He’d asked himself that question many times over in the past few months. Nick had been used to living with others for all of his life. Being alone was quite different.

“After Silver and I broke up, it didn’t feel right to keep living with Lawrence, Trevor, and Lily,” he explained.

She nodded, her eyes clearing as more time passed. “I can understand that, but I’m surprised Lawrence let you go.”

“As my sire, he can pretty much watch me wherever I’m living. I’m sure if I were to go off the deep end, he’d get some type of psychic notice,” Nick explained. “It’s strange. It feels like I don’t have privacy at times, and at others I’m totally alone.”

She cocked her head to the side, studying him. Over the past two years of knowing Mirabella, Nick didn’t quite know what to think of her. She’d always been in the presence of her aunt, who was quite overpowering. Mentally, it was hard to separate memories of the two of them. The one time he had rescued her with Trevor, Mirabella had been totally passed out—under the influence of some other type of drug, or spell, or supernatural creature. In other words, she’d definitely not been herself.

“So how come we keep meeting this way?” Nick teased. “You always seem to be running into trouble.”

“Let’s just say I’m not very street smart,” she said. “Tante Teresa has kept me isolated a bit too much. Don’t know how to make it on my own in such large crowds, but I’m starting to feel like I need to escape the prison of her watchful eye.”

“Well, you picked a hell of a way to experience it,” Nick said. “It’s not full Mardi Gras yet, but these crowds building up to those events are almost as bad. You have to be careful on the streets.”

“I’m learning that. It’s a much different world to be out there than in the store.”

“I can’t believe Teresa let you out either. She’s gotta know what it’s like out there.”

A flush brightened Mirabella’s cheeks, and Nick thought about how gorgeous she looked in his bed, the contrast of her darker skin tone to the pale blue sheets. With all the mixed-breed genetics in New Orleans, both of them looked to be of Creole heritage. True, his coloring was a bit more pale now that he was dead and all. Mirabella’s skin shimmered in the moonlight.

“I might have slipped out while she slept,” she admitted. “The lure of the music drew me out, and I wanted to see what it was like.”

Nick was experiencing a lure all of his own. Her luscious lips drew him in. She caught him watching her, and she licked a droplet of water off her bottom lip. He sat on the edge of the bed, and she leaned toward him, her eyes half-mast.

Her breath smelled sweet, like fresh almonds mixed with vanilla. He shouldn’t kiss her. She was too young and too naïve. But while his head told him to step away, his desire took over, craving the physical connection.

At this moment, though, with her ensconced within his bed, the physical possibilities loomed endless. No one knew she was here. They could do whatever they desired.

Softly, his lips brushed against hers. He slipped his hand around the back of her neck, drawing her in closer and holding her steady. He probed her mouth with his tongue, requesting entrance, and she more than willingly opened beneath him.

She sighed against his mouth. Warmth. Vitality. Life.

All the traits a beautiful young woman possessed and a vampire like him lacked.

“I’d better take you home,” he said, giving one last effort to be a gentleman.

“What if I don’t want to go?”

“I’m trying to do what’s best here,” he said. He made a move to get off the bed, and she followed him, her body curling into his. Her warmth enveloping him.

“Best for whom? Not you or me,” she said. “I want more of your kisses.”

 Excerpt

Tino cursed every person in Isabella’s life including himself. She should not be here in the middle of what he now believed to be a showdown between the drug lord, the gangs stealing his goods, and DEA. He wove in and out of traffic, his foot pressing the accelerator to the floor as he sped back to Garza’s compound. He wanted to charge into the house and confront the man but that would only get him killed and perhaps Isabella as well.

He punched the button on the call box at the gate and was buzzed in. Everyone, including the staff, milled about the grounds. Tino parked his vehicle in the garage and strode up to Cezar.

“Why is everyone walking around?”

“We still have not found Hector.” Cezar motioned toward the house. “Perhaps you should go in and tell jefe all you know about where Hector could be. I told you to watch him.”

Tino shoved the man in the chest. This was an excellent way to work off his rage. “You did not tell me I was to babysit.”

Cezar shoved back. “You knew he was incompetent.”

Tino stood in front of Cezar ready to shove a fist in his face, when he caught sight of Garza watching. He pressed his arms down to his side, clenching his fists. “I did not think he could screw up parking cars.” Shaking out his tense arm muscles, he nodded toward the house. “I’ll go see Garza now.”

Special Deal on What Kings Ate & Wizards Drank by Krista D. Ball

I don't post many deals or sales but this was a book I loved and the author is a favorite of mine. "What Kings Ate & Wizards Drank" is a conversational look at common myths and mistakes in historical and fantasy books concerning food and eating. Ball educates without preaching and, as in most of her writing, infuses it with humor. You don't need to be a writer or a foodie to enjoy this book.

For 3 days only, it's on sale at Amazon for 99 cents. Don't have a Kindle? Not a problem. Purchase the Kindle edition, email the receipt to Krista ( be sure to block out any personal details that you'd rather not share) and she'll send you the book in a different format. Krista's email is kristadball@gmail.com.

Blog Tour Review & Giveaway of Baked Alaska by Josi S Kilpack

Publisher: Shadow Mountain
Series: Culinary Mystery #9
Format Read: PDF
Release Date: February 18, 2013
Buying Links:  Amazon | Barnes & Noble  | The Book Depository

Book Blurb from the author:
An Alaskan cruise is the setting for amateur detective Sadie Hoffmillers latest adventure. Sadie plans to spend time relaxing with her two grown children, Breanna and Shawn, and her boyfriend, Pete, while enjoying the luxury and cuisine of an elegant cruise ship and helping to plan her daughters upcoming wedding. But even as the crew prepares to leave port, Sadie has suspicions about the voyage ahead and the relationship between her normally easygoing son and a mysterious female passenger he obviously knows but refuses to discuss. When the woman is discovered unconscious during the second night at sea, Sadies apprehension escalates. Over the last few years, Sadie has developed an extreme dislike for secrets and it would seem her son is keeping one from her.
*Includes eight new mouthwatering recipes, tested and approved by the official bakers of Sadies Virtual Test Kitchen.

Bea's Thoughts:

This was the first book in this series that I've read and it worked well as a stand alone except for vague and mysterious references to an unnamed, apparently traumatic event that happened in Boston. That was a minor irritation though.

I had a hard time at first warming up to Sadie. Another character described her as "a super-controlling-freak-out-mom" and that was how she struck me also. She has a hard time letting her grown children make their own decisions and choices and she wants to know everything about their lives. She loosens up during the book and I warmed up to her.

The mysteries happen organically and don't feel artificial nor does her involvement. She is intimately tied to the first mystery and, though it's not apparent at first, to the second one. In addition to the mysteries, we get a close-up look at Sadie's family and their dynamics. What appear to be coincidences at first are later revealed to be otherwise and Kilpack does an excellent job of sprinkling hints and clues throughout the story. I enjoyed meeting her children Shawn and Breanna, and her boyfriend Pete. The ending was unexpected and a tear jerker but in a good way. As I said, at first I had a hard time warming up to Sadie and I had a difficult time staying engaged with the story, but gradually I got pulled in and enjoyed the mysteries and the story.

I'm not a baker or even much of a cook yet I enjoy reading mysteries with food themes, maybe because I love to eat? There are recipes in the book ranging from easy to complicated, based on reading them. It's a nice bonus though I wish they'd all been collected at the end of the book instead of interrupting chapters. It might be less disruptive in print but on my kindle it was a nuisance (I had the PDF converted kindle format).

I received a PDF from the publisher for review as part of the blog tour.
