Back To You by Jessica Scott: Giveaway, Excerpt & Q&A with Jessica

Today I'm participating in the release blitz for "Back To You" by Jessica Scott, out tomorrow. CarolKat and I reviewed it together and our review will be up in the morning. Jessica is one of my favorite authors, in any genre, and one of the best romance authors currently being published. "Back to You" is the third full-length book in her "Coming Home" series and it tells the story of US Army captain Trent Davila and his wife Laura. Trent has been deployed so often that his marriage is falling apart and in "Back to You" Scott gives us the story of their attempts to repair it. I love stories where the focus is an established couple and seeing how they keep their relationship together. In this case, it's also a second chance story.

As part of the release blitz, there's an interview with Jessica, an excerpt, and a giveaway, so get comfy and read on!

Cover Reveal - All For You by Jessica Scott

So, as you all know, Jessica Scott is one of my favorite authors. She writes amazing, emotional but non-manipulative romances. "All For You" is book four in her Coming Home series and I expect that like the others, it will have me in tears *places order for a case of Kleenex*. It features Sergeant First Class Reza Iaconelli and Army Captain Emily Lindberg. There isn't a blurb yet but Jessica sent along the prologue to whet your appetite. The expected release date is February 4th, 2014.

Camp Taji, Iraq
2007

Sergeant First Class Reza Iaconelli had seen better days. He closed his eyes, wishing he was anywhere but curled up on the latrine floor in the middle of some dirty, shitty desert. The cold linoleum caressed his cheek, soothing the sensation of a billion spiders creeping over his skin. He had to get up, to get back to his platoon before someone came looking for him. Running patrols through the middle of Sadr City was so much better than being balled up on the bathroom floor, puking his guts out.

I'll Be Home For Christmas Release Day Giveaway & Excerpt

It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of Scott's writing, even if she makes me sob. Her stories are real and powerful and her characters are people you just can't help but care about. Her newest novella, "I'll Be Home For Christmas", releases today and Jessica and her publisher, Forever Romance, are celebrating. There's an excerpt from the story and a fantastic giveaway and you can read my review.

USA Today bestselling author Jessica Scott is a career army officer; mother of two daughters, three cats and three dogs; wife to a career NCO and wrangler of all things stuffed and fluffy. She is a terrible cook and even worse housekeeper, but she's a pretty good shot with her assigned weapon and someone liked some of the stuff she wrote. Somehow, her children are pretty well-adjusted and her husband still loves her, despite burned water and a messy house.

She's written for the New York Times At War Blog, PBS Point of View: Regarding War Blog, and Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. She deployed to Iraq in 2009 as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom/New Dawn and has served as a company commander at Fort Hood, Texas.

She's pursuing a PhD in Sociology in her spare time and most recently, she's been featured as one of Esquire Magazine's Americans of the Year for 2012.

Blurb from goodreads:

There's nothing in the world Army Sergeant Vic Carponti loves more than his wife and his country. Smart-mouthed and easy tempered, he takes everything as a joke . . . except his promise to come home to his wife, Nicole, for Christmas. As he prepares to leave for his latest deployment into Iraq, Vic will do everything he can to shield his beautiful, supportive wife from the realities of war . . . and from his own darkest fears.

As a career army wife, Nicole Carponti knows just what to expect from her husband's tour of duty: loneliness, relentless worry, and a seemingly endless countdown until the moment Vic walks through the door again. But when the unthinkable happens, Nicole and Vic's bond is tested like never before and changes everything they believe to be true about the power of love and the simple beauty of being home for the holidays.

Cover Reveal of Back To You by Jessica Scott

Yep, another cover reveal; two in one day. Jessica Scott is one of my favorite romance authors; she writes powerful, compelling, realistic stories. She rips my guts out, makes me laugh, and gives me hope. "Back To You" is the third full length novel in the Coming Home series, about US Army soldiers and the men and women who love them.

This story focuses on Trent and his wife Laura, whom we've met before. I'm really hoping for a happy ending but one thing I know is that Jessica will put me, and all the readers, through the wringer and I should stock up on tissues.

COVER REVEAL& EXCERPT - I'll Be Home for Christmas by Jessica Scott

Woooo, another Jessica Scott book! Her books rip my guts out but I love them; they are powerful, tender, heartbreaking, real and full of hope. Her next book, "I'll Be Home for Christmas", is due to be released November 5th, just in time for the holidays. It's part of her Coming Home series and shines the light on Carponti, who was in earlier stories.

Jessica had this so say about "I'll Be Home for Christmas" - "I can't tell you how excited I am to share the cover for Carponti's Christmas novella I'll Be Home For Christmas. I really loved writing his story and it's a story that came about because fans kept asking for him."

Blurb from Goodreads -

Sergeant Vic Carponti takes everything as a joke, even the war. And yet, as he leaves on this latest deployment, even the resolute struggles to keep everyone around him smiling. As Carponti faces his darkest fear, it is his wife Nicole's steadfast love and support that will get him through.

The Long Way Home by Jessica Scott: Giveaway, Excerpt, Trailer & Cover Reveal!

Jessica Scott has a new book out today, a non-fiction. "The Long Way Home" is a follow up to "To Iraq and Back" which was a compilation of blog posts about her time as soldier in Iraq while this one takes a more personal approach. You can read this one without having read "To Iraq and Back".

I love the cover; the juxtaposition of war and family, drab helmet and cute toy. It perfectly summarizes the jobs and challenges that Jessica, and other soldiers, face both during their tour of duty and when they returrn.

Blurb from the author ~
My name is Jessica Scott. I am a soldier. I am a mother. I am a wife.

Bestselling novelist Jessica Scott takes you on her first person journey home from war.

In 2009, Army second lieutenant Jessica Scott deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn. She thought deploying was the hardest thing she'd ever do.

She was wrong.
This is the story of a mother coming home from war and learning to be a mom again. This is the story of a lieutenant making the grade and becoming a company commander. This is the journey of a writer persevering through a hundred rejections. This is the story of  a soldier learning to be a woman again. This is the story of a soldier learning to ask for help.
This is the journey as it happened, without commentary.

This is her blog. There are many blogs from the Iraq war, but this one is hers.

Publisher: Tormia Creatives

Giveaway & Interview with Romance Author Jessica Scott

I'm delighted to have Jessica Scott here today. I've read two of her stories and they were wonderful. She's out and about this month touring on behalf of her new short story, "Anything for You". It's a beautiful, gut-wrenching love story that shows why she is such a good writer. She's also written two full length novels; all three stories are part of her Coming Home series. She also recently published "To Iraq and Back", a non-fiction collection of posts from her blog concerning her 2009 service in Iraq.

Jessica is a career army officer, mother of two daughters, three cats and three dogs, wife to a career NCO and wrangler of all things stuffed and fluffy. She is a terrible cook and even worse housekeeper, but she's a pretty good shot with her assigned weapon and someone liked some of the stuff she wrote. Somehow, her children are pretty well adjusted and her husband still loves her, despite burned water and a messy house.

She's written for the New York Times At War Blog, PBS Point of View Regarding War, and IAVA. She deployed to Iraq in 2009 as part of OIF/New Dawn and recently stepped down as company commander at Fort Hood. Oprah has called her. True story.

Her debut novel "Because Of You" launched Loveswept, the first Random House digital imprint. More recently, she's been featured as one of Esquire Magazine's Americans of the Year for 2012.

Okay, grab a drink, use the facilities, and get cozy; Jess and I had lots to chat about. :)

Bea: Please tell us a little about your new release, "Anything For You".
Jessica: Anything For You is a short story about Shane & Jen from Because of You. They got together when both of them were vulnerable: Shane healing from injuries sustained in combat, Jen healing from breast cancer. Fast forward a year and we get a little glimpse into their HEA.

Bea: Why writing? Would you continue to write if you were no longer published?
Jessica: Yes, I would keep writing because the voice in my head would make me. I love writing. It’s something I do for me and I get to explore big questions.

Bea: What’s coming up next for you with your writing? Are you working on your next book? Can you tell us a little about it?
Jessica: I’m finishing up Laura & Trent’s story in "Back To You" and Reza’s story in "Come Home To Me". After that, I’m taking a different route and writing something completely not romance. It’s really dark and I’m kind of loving it! (Oooo, I wanna know more! ~ Bea)

Bea: Any plans to write a romance that isn’t military? What about other genres? You’ve done romance and memoir, what’s next?
Jessica: Next up is a dark fiction. That’s all I can really say about it b/c it’s a sekret, lol!

Bea: Why romance? What do you like about it?
Jessica: I love that romance is about relationships on all levels. After all, everything we do is about relationships. If more people remembered that, maybe the world would be a little bit nicer to live.

Bea: Like many authors, you juggle writing and all that entails, and a day job. How do you manage that? Do they ever conflict?
Jessica: They don’t conflict but they do take a lot of time. This weekend, I allowed myself to just sit on the couch and watch the super bowl and surf twitter. It was the first time I’d allowed myself to just sit and chill out in a long, long time.

Bea: You mentioned once that your co-workers don’t know about your writing. How have you kept them separate? Do you anticipate ever sharing with them?
Jessica: No, I don’t anticipate sharing them. I write under a pen name because when I’m at work, the military is the focus. I don’t have time for someone asking me about getting published or to read their manuscript. We’ve got a job to do, you know?

Bea: Does your family read your books? What do they think?
Jessica: Mom, yes, everyone else, no. Mom is a big supporter!

Bea: What is your favorite part of writing?
Jessica: Honestly? I love revising. I absolutely love seeing the raw material transition to something readable.

Bea: When you write, do you outline or just wing it?
Jessica: I’ve started outlining and writing synopsis. I find it helps tremendously to know where a story needs to head. It keeps my good idea fairy under control, lol!

Bea: You recently published "To Iraq and Back", a collection of blog posts about your deployment to Iraq in 2009. What prompted you to publish this book? Have you gotten any flack for it?
Jessica: I’ve been really surprised by the support for To Iraq and Back! It spent almost 5 weeks on the Amazon top 100 for military biographies - paid! I was so flattered and surprised.

I’d decided to publish it because there were lots of folks who weren’t along for the ride when it first started out. And because my time in Iraq has influenced my writing so heavily, I figured I’d package it for people who were interested to see.

Bea: Do you see yourself leaving the military to write full-time? What are your dreams for both careers?
Jessica: I’d love to command a battalion in the army but that’s a long way down the road. And honestly, I’d like to just keep writing. Eventually, my dream is for my husband and I to be retired and to travel around the country with him fishing bass tournaments and me writing, living out of an RV. I think that sounds awesome.

Bea: Do you prefer ebooks or print, or do you enjoy both?
Jessica: I enjoy both but I’m forced to admit that most of my reading is done on my ipad these days. It’s just so much easier to read on that while I’m working out. But I still buy print books for my keeper shelf so it makes me sad when books are only digital.

Bea:  If you could be a character in any book – lead, villain, sidekick, etc – who would you be and why?
Jessica: I’m the lead, except that I have to say, I make a really good sidekick, lol!

Bea: You’ve been published traditionally and you’ve self-published. Do you have a preference? Will you do more self-publishing?
Jessica: Honestly, there are strengths and weaknesses to both self publishing and traditional publishing. I don’t think my self publishing would be as strong had it not been for being traditionally published. It all depends on where an author is and what their goals are, honestly. Yes, I do see me doing more self publishing.

Bea: Does your family read your books? What do they think?
Jessica: Mom, yes, everyone else, no. Mom is a big supporter!

Bea: I know you’ve been busy applying to graduate school; what will you be studying?
Jessica: I’m going for sociology - hopefully - if I get accepted!

Now for some fill in the blank questions:
  1.          The first book you ever loved was: Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey
  2.          My perfect day is: a day on the lake fishing with my husband
  3.          My guilty pleasure is: lounging around a bookstore
  4.          My favorite meal is: Mellow Mushroom Pizza (I'm not sure what this is but I'm intrigued! ~ Bea)
  5.          Books are important because: they are the transmission of our culture, they allow us to escape and the offer us hope
  6.          My favorite book is: oh wow, there are too many to name
  7.          The book or author that inspired me to write is: I honestly cannot remember, I’ve been doing this for so long, lol!
  8.          The best advice I’ve ever received was: life is all about relationships. Remember that.
  9.          The authors, dead or living, that I’d most like to have dinner with are: Anne McCaffrey or Chuck Wendig. Because Anne is someone I look up to and Chuck just seems like a really funny guy
  10.       My dream man is: don’t roll your eyes but my husband: he’s funny, he makes me laugh when I want to cry, he’s sexy as hell and he’s a good dad. (Awwww, that's sweet; he's a lucky man. ~ Bea)

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions and best of luck with “Anything for You”.

Thanks so much for having me Bea!

Book Blurb (from goodreads):

He plays by the rules, she’s not afraid to break them. Now these two strong-willed army captains will prove that opposites attract . . .

A by-the-book captain with a West Point background, Captain Evan Loehr refuses to mix business with pleasure—except for an unguarded instance years ago when he succumbed to the deep sensuality of redheaded beauty Claire Montoya. From that moment on, though, Evan has been at odds with her, through two deployments to Iraq and back again. But when he is asked to train a team prepping for combat alongside Claire, battle-worn Evan is in for the fight of his life.

Strong, gutsy, and loyal, Captain Claire Montoya has worked hard to earn the rank on her chest. In Evan, Claire sees a rigid officer who puts the rules before everything else—including his people. When the mission forces them together, Claire soon discovers that there is more to Evan than meets the eye.

He’s more than the rank on his chest; he’s a man with dark secrets and deep longings. For all their differences, Evan and Claire share two crucial passions: their country and each other.

Bea's Thoughts:

This book cost me a night’s sleep. I kept trying to put it down and go to bed and every time it called my name and wouldn’t let me go. I was up until 3AM reading it. I started it one night, got to about 25% and went to bed, but the next night…oh, the next night. It was totally worth it.

Claire and Evan are two very likable people, though I empathized more with Claire. Evan’s rigidity was off-putting at times, not only for me but for Claire too. But as we get to know him better, and see beneath the surface, we understand why he is the way he is and we see that he is willing to step outside the lines, when convinced that it’s merited.

Evan and Claire are scarred, both emotionally and physically. Events from their pasts have affected them; neither one has been in a serious relationship until they hook up about halfway through the story. While they have been interested in each other for years, they’ve also worked together both abroad in Iraq and back home in the US. Unfortunately, they usually clash when they work together. Evan is a career officer and believes in following the rules and orders while Claire started out enlisted before going to Officer Candidate School and becoming a captain; she’s more inclined to question things and take shortcuts.

“How can you be an officer and be that emotionally attached to everything you do?” “Because at least I give a shit about what I do. I may be loud and I may speak my mind, but no one will ever say I don’t care.” She took a single step backwards, crossing her arms over her chest. “How can you call yourself a leader when you don’t care about anything but doing what the commander wants? Those are people, not a means to an end, Evan. You get the right people in the job and the rest will take care of itself.” “That’s part of your problem, Claire. You might be good, but you’re not good enough to succeed on talent alone. You’re reckless. And you don’t believe in the rules. But they exist for a reason.”

This difference in approach, and the resulting consequences, is a major source of conflict. Another major source is the drinking problem of an enlisted man, Reza, who is a friend of Claire’s. As they work together on their current mission, and deal with Reza’s drinking, they get past the barriers they’ve put up, and become closer physically and emotionally. Their relationship proceeds in fits and starts as they struggle with their feelings and their work.

Scott grabbed me from the start and never let go. While some things were predictable, it didn’t matter because I had to see what happened next. Scott weaves in details about the Army life and respectfully shows military life both stateside and during military engagements. It was a pleasure to read a military based story that was actually accurate yet not full of propaganda or cynicism. Scott’s characters are nuanced, realistic and a pleasure to spend time with. I also cared about the secondary characters and I want to know what happens with Reza, Sarah and Engle.

Although this is part of a series, it can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty.

“Until There Was You” is exciting, emotional and a joy to read. Go get a copy now!
