Helping him could end her career...
And her life.
Sworn to uphold the law, police officer Kate Dexter believes in doing the right thing. But when she meets an injured, altogether too sexy ATF agent, her entire world is turned upside down.
Jonas Burke is a wanted man. Framed for murder, he needs sanctuary--now. Finding it in the arms of a beautiful, feisty fellow cop isn't exactly his best plan, but he's desperate and wounded, and time is running out for him to prove his innocence. Armed with a little more than a conspiracy theory, Jonas has no choice but to ask for Kate's help.
Kate is torn between her duty to "serve and protect" and her growing desire for this man on the run. With her colleagues in pursuit and Jonas's enemies closing in, she and Jonas will have to work together if they want to survive. But can she really trust him beyond a shadow of doubt?
First, a quick business note before I get to the review. The author sent me an ebook ARC for review but the book itself is available in audio only, at the moment. The excerpt below is an audio excerpt and the giveaway is for an audio book.
Okay, now the book. :)
I liked both Kate and Jonas, though he frustrated me at times with his refusal to trust or let people in. He holds them at arm's length, thinking he's keeping himself safe that way. But he's not, not really, it costs him both emotionally and professionally. He also keeps blocking Kate, rejecting her, afraid he'll hurt her. She's attracted to him but also wary. He's a man on the run from the law, a fugitive. She should turn him in but takes a chance and helps him. Before long, they're being chased by authorities in both Canada and the US and they're fighting their feelings as well as their pursuers. I had guesses about who was guilty and who wasn't, who could be trusted and who couldn't, and I was partially correct. I like it when I'm wrong, lol.
There was lots of action with both Kate and Jonas on the run. They had some bad luck and some good luck and some that was hard to believe but overall the story felt real and plausible, which doesn't always happen in romantic suspense. It helps that the author's husband is a a member of the RCMP so she had a source for accuracy. I did question some of Kate's action but emotion overtakes reason sometimes.
The romance was typically quick due to the intense situation they found themselves in. As I mentioned earlier, Jonas was stubborn, blind and thickheaded. Fortunately he wasn't immune to reason or epiphanies. Events began to happen quickly towards the end and I was metaphorically biting my nails to see what would happen. The epilogue, eh. I am not a fan of epilogues but Poitevin gives us a solid HEA that's true to the characters.
"Shadow of Doubt" was a solid entry into romantic suspense. An interesting plot, lots of action, romance, and little bits of humor made for an engaging story.
