Blurb from goodreads:

Ruthless cyberhackers seize a US nuclear submarine, training its most powerful weapon on a target so unusual, yet so vulnerable, that a successful strike could change the face of the earth for millions of years. With the world held hostage, former NSA operative Lana Elkins must join forces with a mysterious computer mastermind—who might be working with the enemy—to avert this unprecedented Armageddon. Intrigue, power, and blackmail force Lana to fight on all fronts—land, sea, air, and in cyberspace—to prevent the worst catastrophe in human history.

The author of Lethal Code returns with a new geopolitical thriller that combines cyberterror, environmental devastation, and unhinged ambition.

Bea's Thoughts:

Well, "Trident Code" went where I did not expect and now I want the next book, I assume there is one, to see what happens next and how Waite handles it. In fact, during the last 80 pages or so I was sure it would end on a cliffhanger and I was working up a good mad. Aaaand, then there wasn't a cliffhanger. LOL I didn't think Waite could wrap it up but he did and in a satisfactory manner.

What I Liked:

1) Waite managed to make the tech speak, the governmental and military alphabet soup, and geek talk not overwhelming. I didn't get lost and he explained, without going overboard.

2) Certain aspects of the story, particularly the science and the military parts, were believable and all too
conceivable. Is all of the science plausible? Well, it may or may not be realistic but it struck me as eminently plausible.

3) The story was a page turner, it kept me reading to see what would happen. It was a thriller for sure, with devastating actions and consequences.

What I Didn't Like:

1) The characters were not three-dimensional and two of the main characters were interesting but cliched. The hero, Lana, while very likable but was a little too perfect and the secondary story about her daughter and her daughter's nanny was unnecessary.

2) And related to the first, there's a romance hinted that I did not buy in the slightest. Maybe if there had been more development but he came up out of nowhere and things happened very quickly.

3) I'm still not completely sure why our hero Lana was called in and why the government didn't handle it themselves is still unclear to me.

Final Verdict:

While the character development was weak, the story was thrilling and it seems all too likely. I definitely will be looking for the first book and the next book.

  1. Sounds like an interesting book, Bea. Too bad about the character development. That could be a deal breaker for me.

    1. It was a good story except for that but yeah, it could be a deal breaker.

  2. I'm really intrigued but I'd be worried it would fall flat for me due to the issues you pointed out with the characters and the romance.
