BEA'S BOOK NOOK "I can't imagine a man really enjoying a book and reading it only once." C. S. Lewis “If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all.” ― Oscar Wilde

Bea Talks Reading Habits

I was tagged by Katherine at I Wish I Lived in a Library. I've been busy so it's taken me a while to get around to doing this. The questions were interesting and fun. I'm not going to tag anyone but feel free to answer in the comments or do your own post. :)

Do you have a certain place at home for reading?

98% of my at-home reading occurs on my couch, in my living room. The other 2% is in my rocking chair in the living room or in my bed.

Goof & I on the couch.
Bookmark or random piece of paper?

Yes. :D I have a whole collection of bookmarks but I'm lazy and grab whatever's closest which is usually a random piece of paper, often an envelope from a bill.

Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop after a chapter/a certain amount of pages?

I try to stop at a logical point, like a chapter or scene break, but when forced, I can stop anywhere.

Do you eat or drink while reading?

*hangs head* Much more often than I should. I always have a glass of something to drink on hand, usually iced tea, which is okay. But I'm also likely to nibble and graze while reading or watching TV, usually on junk food.

Yeah, my snacks never look this pretty.

Multitasking: Music or TV while reading?

I can't read if it's too quiet, my focus disappears, so yes, I have TV or music on while reading.

One book at a time or several at once?

Usually, two at once. Often, I have a Kindle book that I'll read while I'm out and about and a print book at home but other times I'll have several Kindle books going at once.

Reading at home or everywhere?

Oh, everywhere! I tuck my Kindle in my purse when I go out; pre-Kindle, I would tick whatever print book I was reading into my purse. Plus, I'll read other items while I'm out. For instance, at the doctor's office, I'll read the gossip magazines. :D I won't buy them but they're good trashy fun once in a while.

Reading out loud or silently in your head?

Usually, silently. But, if something doesn't make sense, I'll read it out loud and that sometimes helps.

Do you read ahead or even skip pages?

No, I have to read in order. I can't skip or read ahead.

Breaking the spine or keeping it like new?

I prefer to keep like new but I re-read books so the spine eventually cracks or breaks. I also buy used books and some of those have broken spines.

Do you write in your books?

I did in college in text books but these days, no. However, I use the highlight feature on my Kindle all the time. I love that feature. :) I can save passages, make notes and it doesn't make a mess of the book.

So, tell me about YOUR reading habits. :)

  1. love this...its so fun to look at our own reading habits. I do drink and eat while I read!! I can't just eat and NOT!! haha I do listen to music while I read, mostly classical or soundtrack scores. I read wherever I can. The only time I skip is during a love scene or I will just skim if I am not in the mood for it.

    1. Yeah, I find it hard not to eat while reading. I also skip love scenes sometimes if I'm not in the mood. Nice to know I'm not alone!

  2. Fun meme! I do a lot of my reading in bed. Other than that, it's wherever I happen to be at the time. I don't usually listen to music when I read. And like you, I sometimes eat when I read... because why waste my lunch break? Or my tea break? Valuable minutes for reading, those. ;-)

    1. I have a hard time reading in bed as I tend to fall asleep. : D And yes, I eat during my breaks. People sometimes find that unsocial, for some reason.:D

  3. Yay! I'm glad you participated. I tend to have the same setup with numbers of books. Goof looks quite happy with the reading situation and I'm squinting at the stack of books you've got over there! I want to see the titles!

    1. It was fun, and not too hard. :D

The titles in the left pile are Heroes Are My Weakness by Susan Elizabeth Phillips, When A Scot Ties the Knot by Tessa Dare, Her Lucky Cowboy by Jennifer Ryan, Colton Cowboy Protector by Beth Cornelison, and Midnight Thunder by Vicki Lewis Thompson. In the right hand pile are Playing Dirty by HelenKay Dimon, Exit Strategy by Lena Diaz, You Cannoli DIe Once by Shelley Costa, and Basil Instinct by Shelley Costa. Lots of romances in those piles. :D

  4. Great answers, Bea. I really relate to the bookmarks one--I do the same thing. I have so many lovely bookmarks, but never near the book I'm reading, so I usually use an envelope from a bill also.

    1. I think a lot of us do. Bookmarks are lovely but somehow don't end up being practical.

  5. We have similar habits like I always carry my phone or ereader with me so I can always read when I get bored or waiting. I also use whatever is close at hand as a bookmark and I try not to break the spine. I can't read when there's too much noice though

    1. Yeah, after a certain level of sound, it gets hard for me to concentrate. I need just the right level of noise to be able to concentrate.

  6. This is fun. I occasionally read two books at a time but I prefer to just have one- I'm always afraid I'll get 'em mixed up if I have too much going. :) I do listen to music sometimes too, usually instrumental stuff- if there's singing I might get distracted. And bookmarks- I have several but never seem to use them!

    1. When reading several books simultaneously, it is easier if they're different genres as I do get mixed up otherwise. Bookmarks, too funny. Does anyone actually use a proper bookmark? :D

  7. I usually have something going in the background at home while reading too. If I out somewhere, the sounds around me are usually good enough. lol Goof looks like he spotted something interesting.

  8. Good list and answers, Bea. It's always fun to understand a little more about people whose blog we read. I enjoyed reading how and where you do your reading! And love the photo of Goof!

  9. That's a fun tag, I must keep it in mind to do sometime. I never read out loud, it wouldn't even cross my mind to do so but now I feel like trying it! And your reading place/position looks just like mine, sprawled out all over the couch :)

    1. The only problem I have with sprawling is I tend to doze off. :D So I alternate between sprawling and sitting. :)
