Friday Book Memes: No Man's Land by David Baldacci

I'm participating in two Friday book memes, Book Beginnings On Fridays, hosted by Rose City Reader, and The Friday 56, hosted by Freda's Voice.

Every Friday, share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

For the Friday 56, grab a book, any book. Turn to Page 56, or 56% on your ereader. If you have to improvise, that's okay. Find a snippet, short and sweet. Post it, and add the url to your post at the link here.

As I was perusing my Goodreads shelves I realized I still hadn't read this so I requested it from my library and am now reading it. Baldacci is a fave author of mine and I liked the first three books in this series. Sadly, no more have come out in this series since this published in 2016. He's moved onto another series, which I'm also enjoying.

Paul Rogers was waiting for them to come and kill him.

Yep, that's an attention grabber. Mystery writers seem to have a knack for drawing you right in.

The quote is from 56%  in the ebook.

Rogers looked down at his hands.
Who the hell had he been holding?
Who the hell had be been talking to?
Who the eff had he thrown out the window?

Ooops, such a bummer when you murder the wrong person. :P

Click on the cover for the book's Goodreads page.
I'm 3/4 of the way through so far and enjoying it. It's more mystery/psychological suspense than thriller or action.

What book are you reading? Please share in the comments, leave a link to your post.

  3. Strong beginning for sure. My read isn't nearly as weighty. The Elephant's Girl. #middlegrade

    1. Not weighty exactly but it could have been if Baldacci had gone deeper into the topics.

  12. Baldacci knows how to keep you on the edge of your seat. Reading the blurbs, I can't tell whether the protagonist is Rogers or Puller, which is also not unusual for his books. The good guys are as likely to be killers as the bad guys.

    1. He really does. I'd say both Rogers and Puller are protagonists and I agree with your killers comment.
