Charity Sunday is a monthly blog hop founded by author Lisabet Sarai at her blog, Beyond Romance. The idea is to support a charity, or non-profit. For each comment other than mine on this post, over the next 30 days, I will donate $2 per comment (excluding my own) for a total of $30 to a national organization, the National Domestic Violence Hotline.
Unfortunately, here in the US, and presumably elsewhere in the world, the need to stay at home during the COVID-19 pandemic has meant an increase in domestic violence. Domestic violence is a problem even at the best of times, and these are not good times.
From the Hotline's website, some ways that COVID-19 can have a negative impact on intimate relationships:
- Abusive partners may withhold necessary items, such as hand sanitizer or disinfectants.
- Abusive partners may share misinformation about the pandemic to control or frighten survivors, or to prevent them from seeking appropriate medical attention if they have symptoms.
- Abusive partners may withhold insurance cards, threaten to cancel insurance, or prevent survivors from seeking medical attention if they need it.
- Programs that serve survivors may be significantly impacted –- shelters may be full or may even stop intakes altogether. Survivors may also fear entering shelter because of being in close quarters with groups of people.
- Survivors who are older or have chronic heart or lung conditions may be at increased risk in public places where they would typically get support, like shelters, counseling centers, or courthouses.
- Travel restrictions may impact a survivor’s escape or safety plan – it may not be safe for them to use public transportation or to fly.
- An abusive partner may feel more justified and escalate their isolation tactics.
If you, or someone you know, are in dangerous relationship or home situation, or just suspect that is the case, please reach out for help. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is an option whether or not you have a local organization. My wish is for everyone to be safe, physically and emotionally.

Hello, Bea,
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for joining in today, and especially for supporting this cause. I've read a lot about the rise in domestic violence and the increased risks for abused partners due to the epidemic. I'm so glad to see you supporting this cause, and raising awareness about the dangers.
I've always had an interest in domestic violence and I've also been following the news about how the pandemic is affecting it. I'm glad to be able to help in a small way. Thank you for the blog hop!
DeleteThanks for doing this. I have heard about the increase in domestic. My husband retired from the state police and hated seeing domestic violence cases.
ReplyDeleteOh, I can just imagine! They must have been so challenging.
DeleteBea, I'm so happy you chose this charity! This is one of the things I worried about when we were all told to stay home--sometimes closeness is a bad thing. I know your gift will be appreciated!
ReplyDeleteThanks Dee, I hope my gift will be of some use.
DeleteReading this is just heartbreaking. And indeed it was both sobering and poignant to read the immediate message upon clicking the link about those who fear their internet usage may be monitored.
ReplyDeleteThank you for caring about this and supporting the hotline.
Thank YOU for stopping by and commenting!
DeleteGreat post and great info. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThanks Yvonne!
DeleteThankyou so much for joining this.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to help; thanks for visiting and commenting.
DeleteIt's really tragic that the concept of "sheltering in place" is such a misnomer for so many people. Thank you for this!

You're welcome. Thanks for visiting and commenting!
DeleteAs a substitute teacher in high schools. I often wonder about how the kids I've gotten to know are doing. Some will tell me unguarded things that break my heart. I worry that being stuck at home is hurtful to them. Thanks for choosing this charity. There are so many in need, but we should all do what we can.
ReplyDeleteOh, I can only imagine. Here's hoping your students are okay. <3
DeleteIt makes me sad that domestic violence is so common. What a great cause, Bea!
ReplyDeleteThanks Carole!
DeleteGlad to see this is still going, and you're still promoting it.
ReplyDeleteThere should be more new entries on this; don't we all (especially if we're female, the most at risk!) want to have help against domestic violence?
