The Very Hungry Caterpillar Day, usually on the first day of spring, is celebrated nationally at schools, libraries, and bookstores. The Eric Carle museum, located in Amherst, MA, celebrates it every year with fun art activities. I've been to the museum and it's wonderful. They have amazing exhibits, not just on Eric Carle's works and fantastic programs for children. Today, with help from the publisher, we're celebrating The Very Hungry Caterpillar Day here at the Nook.
If you have children or nieces or nephews, or you teach young children in some capacity, then you're probably familiar with "The Very Hungry Caterpillar". I wasn't familiar with it until I started teaching in early childhood over 20 years ago. Now, I know it by heart. 😁 My current class of one and two year olds enjoy the book, especially the colorful pictures and the caterpillar's humongous appetite. Reading it often sparks conversations about the different foods and what they like to eat. In fact, we recently used the book as part of a food and science curriculum unit. Yes, one and two year old children are capable of doing and learning science as long it's age appropriate. But whether you read the book for fun, which we do, or incorporate it into your curriculum, which we do, it's a fun story which appeals to young readers. No doubt you'll read it many, many times. You, too, will know it by heart, if you don't already. 😁
