Top 5 favorite romance tropes

Ah, romance… I can’t get enough of it! I’ve always been a hopeless romantic and have so much love for all types of romance novels. But there are certain romance tropes that I simply adore. Here are my top five favorites:

  1. Friends to Lovers – Probably my all-time fave. I think there’s just something timeless and endearing about this one. Regardless of whether the love is a long time coming or a sudden surprise, I just can’t get enough of this one.
  2. Enemies to Lovers – I love the feistiness of this trope! Lends itself well to snappy dialogue and intense sexual tension. Tends to work best in romantic comedy, but it can be well done in high drama/suspense as well—especially when it adds a bit of comic relief to an otherwise heavy plot.
  3. Second Chance at Love – This one makes me sigh in a good way. Whether the first love ended in heartbreak, tragedy, or just fizzled and died, everyone deserves the chance to find a second love of a lifetime.
  4. Reunited Love – Another one that give me the warm and fuzzies. Sometimes fate or family or some other outside stressor conspires against the perfect couple to drive them apart, but when they are brought back together watch out because the sparks will undoubtedly fly. I think one of my favorite examples of this trope from classic literature is Jane Austen’s Persuasion.
  5. Beauty and the Beast – This is my favorite fairy tale and so it only makes sense that it’d be one of my favorite tropes when used in a metaphorical sense in which “beastliness” could be used to describe a character who is emotionally closed off, gruff/angry/distant as a result of backstory. The character’s journey to healing and acceptance of self is great fun to explore.

  3. Second Chances and Beauty and Beast are so fun to read. If I am in the mood, than Enemies to Lovers---but it really depends ont he context of it. Most of the time I like a good angst romance though. Great tropes you listed here.
