Blurb from goodreads:

She's the Beauty. Can the Beast break her curse before the monsters break her?

I never told anyone my darkest secret.

Something evil whispers in my mind. It threatens to destroy everything I care about, and now it wants me to kidnap and murder a mythical creature. Refusal means excruciating pain or sleepwalking into oncoming traffic ... again.

I don’t dare refuse, even if I have to steal from my friends, sell my body, or ruin my college career. Anything to stop the feeling of its claws scraping the insides of my skull.

That’s when I hired the Hunter, a wolf-man from a magical world, to help me. A tracker for hire, an honorable man who has misplaced his honor, a twisted soul with no heart left to care.

But he has secrets of his own, and I don’t think anyone can save me from the trouble I’m in.

Bea's Thoughts:

I loved the first book, "Playing Hooky", but somehow missed this one, a novella. When the opportunity arose to be part of the tour for the third book, "Taking Chances" I jumped at it and got my hands on both it and "Breaking Angelina". I was in for a surprise! "Taking Chances" and Breaking Angelina" are both darker than "Playing Hooky" was. It took me a bit to adjust me expectations but once I did, I found myself caught up in the story.

"Breaking Angelina" starts a little before the events in "Playing Hooky" and gives us that story from Angelina's perspective. She is, initially, not as likable as Emma, being jealous of her. But she's also suffering a mental breakdown and the Webbs do a fantastic job portraying her gradual deterioration. As it turns out, that deterioration is not completely organic as it's due to supernatural interference. Along the way, Angelina picks up an ally of sorts, a chimera named Hunter, who also becomes a love interest.

I had a hard time at first buying into Hunter's feelings for Angelina, they seemed rushed for the sake of the story. And as I mentioned, this story is much darker than the first one. You don't need to have read "Playing Hooky" before this one but it wouldn't hurt and you definitely need to read this one before the next book, "Taking Chances". This is a series that you need to read in order.

"Breaking Angelina" is a sad, at times heart-breaking story, and it does contain a rape, partially on-page for those of you who'd rather skip such events. But it moves the series forward and allows us a deeper understanding of both Angelina and Hunter, whom we briefly met in the first story.

  1. Thank you so much for taking the time to read and review Breaking Angelina. Her story was hard to write, as painful as it was, but it was an important stepping stone to the rest of the series.

  2. This sounds interesting and unusual. I'll have to look for Playing Hooky since you enjoyed that so much to see if I want to get into the darker part of the series.
