Cat Thursday - Second Breakfast

Welcome to the weekly meme hosted by The True Book Addict that celebrates cats; their foibles and humorousness and the joy they bring. You can join in by posting a favorite LOL cat pic you made or came across, cat art or share with us pics of your own felines, then post your link up at The True Book Addict.

I love Goof, I do, but there are days when I'd really like to throw him out the window (we live on the third floor so I can't just open the door and kick him out). Several years ago, due to his being overweight, having asthma, and at risk for diabetes, the vet and I put him on a diet. We changed the quantity of his food, changed his food to diet food, AND put him on prednisone for the asthma. One of prednisone's side effects is stimulation of the appetite. Yep, we increased his appetite at the same time we decreased his food. Weren't we so nice? :P When I'm on prednisone, I eat anything and everything that isn't nailed down. Now the poor boy is perpetually hungry. I keep thinking he'll adapt but he hasn't yet.

Lately, I've taken to calling him "Vulture". If there's a hint of food, he's right there. I drop something, ANYTHING, on the floor and he flies over at light speed to see if it's edible. Food he used to turn his nose up at is now the best thing ever. And heaven help me when I'm eating snacks on the couch. He stays right next to me while I eat and if something falls, he pounces. That boy can move! :D

I may have to call him "Houdini" instead. The other day I stopped by the vet's on my way home from work and picked up another bag of food as we were getting low. I have a tupperware container I keep the food in. Since it still had food in it, I put the bag on a shelf, at the back behind some other items, and went about my evening. At about 4AM that night, I was woken up by loud noises from the kitchen area. I got up and found that Goof had managed to knock the bag down, without knocking anything else down!, tore it open and was having an early breakfast. I cleaned up his mess, took the bag into the bedroom with me and hid it in my closet, then went back to bed. When I got up for the day, he was begging for a second breakfast.

I posted on facebook about his early morning adventure and several of my nerdy friends (I <3 my nerdy friends) picked up on my "second breakfast" comment, calling him Goofwise Gamgee, and then later that day I saw the pic below. :D

  3. Poor hungry cat lol ! I also have a cat who's right there every time something drops on the floor - even if it can't be eaten, he'll give it a try. He also love salad, by the way ;)

  4. Aws poor Goof. lol We have that trouble with a couple of ours. Food has to be stored in a tight bin they can't open or they go wild. And cant leave ANY people food out or they nibble until I find them.

  5. Poor kitty! It must be tough to be hungry from the prednisone and not get to eat as much as he'd like, but you're doing the right thing.

Ours don't go for people food at all, for some reason. Thomas will drink the water from the tuna can, but they both turn their noses up at the water from the salmon can. And cooked chicken or eggs? Forget it. One of our cats won't tough anything but her regular dry food, even treats. It certainly cuts down on begging from our plates, but it's pretty hard to reward them for good behavior!

  6. We were just talking about this earlier (my mom and I). I was talking about how they stare at you when it's treat time. I give mine a treat in the morning and evening, but they always seem to come around at odd times thinking it's time for another treat. Uh, no. Alice has also done the cat food bag before. They will find what they're looking for.

    Love the Hobbit reference. =O)
