Blurb from goodreads:

Jane Yellowrock is a shape-shifting skinwalker who’s always up for a fight—even if it means putting her life on the line...

The Master of Natchez, Mississippi has a nasty problem on his hands. Rogue vampires—those who follow the Naturaleza and believe that humans should be nothing more than prey to be hunted—are terrorizing his city. Luckily, he knows the perfect skinwalker to call in to take back the streets.

But what he doesn’t tell Jane is that there’s something different about these vamps. Something that makes them harder to kill—even for a pro like Jane. Now, her simple job has turned into a fight to stay alive…and to protect the desperately ill child left in her care.

Bea's Thoughts:

Another solid entry in the series; I didn't love it but I liked it. There was lots of action and many fight scenes, as per most Jane books, so if you like those, you'll like this book. I found my eyes were glazing over and did a lot of skimming; fight scenes don't interest me and since that was much of the action in the story...I particularly glazed over at the many, loving, descriptions of weapons. Jane does love her weapons, and nothing wrong with that, but I couldn't care less. :P

I complained in my review of "Death's Rival" that I was getting tired of Jane's complicated love life and all of the men who lust after her. That doesn't really change in this book though Jane does put the kibosh on anything between her and Eli and he accepts gracefully. Things are still complicated between Jane and Bruiser, Jane and Leo, Jane and Rick, and between Jane, her friend Molly, and Molly's husband Big Evan. Happily, there is progress on the latter and hope for Jane and Molly's friendship. We also meet Bobby and Misha who were at the same orphanage as Jane when she was growing up. Bobby was a friend, Misha and an acquaintance, and they are central to this story.

Once again, the fallout of previous events comes back to haunt Jane. This time though she looks forward to dealing with them as she's been having a rough patch after the events of the previous book. Jane is once again investigating, and while she makes mistakes along the way, she puts her all into it. Once again, I enjoyed the investigative parts. Hey, I like mysteries and detective stories. At the same time, she's coming to terms with her past, her relationships, and learning more about herself. I enjoyed those parts of the story the best. By the end of the book, things are looking up for Jane and she's taking steps to make changes, positive ones.

I enjoy Jane, she's fascinating. She's not a perfect heroine, she has flaws, makes mistakes, but is also a serious bad ass. I would want her on my side and I would not want to go up against her. She's loyal, curious, stubborn, socially awkward (I can relate!), skilled, tenacious, a bit of a troublemaker (not unlike Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson) and someone I'd like to call friend. I also enjoy Beast and was sorry she had a smaller role this time around. I hope we'll see more of her in Black Arts, the next book which is out next week.

So, once again, we have action, intrigue, character development and a solid, well-written story. Onto the next!

  1. That happens to me too. Too much back to back action and I zone out. I question myself when that happens, it's one of those "is it me?" Kinda thing. At least you still found the silver lining here. Like is still better than dislike or even hate.

    Happy new year!

    1. I think it didn't help that I read 4 books back to back that were action-filled. I was getting burnt out. And I did like the book; I like Jane and Beast. :)
