Let's face it the last month hasn't been the highlight of anyone's life. I am currently dealing with having to help my 9 year old with school, partial unemployment, and anxiety. Since I have some extra time on my hands, I signed up for a free month of Kindle Unlimited in hopes that I might find a gem or two. A day later an advert for this book crosses my Facebook timeline. The blurb sounded good but so had the blurbs for the last half dozen I had tried. I honestly did not have high hopes for it but I was very pleasantly surprised. This book is pretty damn good. Ok, I'll admit it. I loved it.
It isn't often you find a book with an older female heroine. Most of the "older" female lead characters might be in their early 30's. Breena is 41, slightly overweight and perimenopausal. She is also a wannabe badass, who turns out to be pretty badass in a bumbling sort of way. I related to her in so many ways. When you hit your 40's, you just don't care anymore. Your filter of things not to say or do is starting to wear away. You have seen it all and you aren't taking much crap from anyone except mother nature. Bree is a trip and I loved her.
She needs money to save her grandmother's house from being sold by her ex. She takes a job with a supernatural group of bounty hunters. Even though she is much older than the other trainees, she does have a tiny edge up on them because she is able to see the shadow world and thanks to her Gran, she had a little training when she was younger.
I spent most of this book laughing out loud. Bree is hysterical. From her inner comments about her raging hormones to her telling a werewolf to sit & stay, I was dying. I have heard authors comment that publishers don't like older lead female characters. I am glad this publisher didn't think this way. This book is pretty awesome and there isn't a huge cliffhanger at the end. There are some dangling threads to lead us to the next book, which sadly does not come out until May. This is exactly how I like my series to end.
If you liked Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series and Kim Harrison's Hollows series, then you will love Shannon Mayer's Forty Proof.
This sounds like something I would like. I'm often looking for books with older heroines. I'll have to check this out.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds really good and I love it when you find the right book at the right time. I do like seeing characters closer to my own age. This one definitely sounds like it is worth a read.
ReplyDeleteI like books with older protagonists -- I'm currently rereading the Mrs. Pollifax books -- and I also like books with a good sense of humor. I may give this a try!
