Friday Memes: Written in Red by Anne Bishop

I'm participating in two Friday book memes, Book Beginnings On Fridays, hosted by Rose City Reader, and The Friday 56, hosted by Freda's Voice.

Every Friday, share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

For the Friday 56, grab a book, any book. Turn to Page 56, or 56% on your ereader. If you have to improvise, that's okay. Find a snippet, short and sweet. Post it, and add the url to your post at the link here.

In between my other reads this past week, I've been dipping into Written in Red, which is a favorite, and a comfort read. I've read it in full about a dozen times. I'm not so much reading it as bouncing around, rereading favorite scenes and quotes.

This is from the prologue.

Long ago, Namid gave birth to all kinds of life, including the beings known as humans. She gave the humans fertile pieces of herself, and she gave them good water. Understanding their nature and the nature of her other offspring, she also gave them enough isolation that they would have a chance to survive and grow. And they did.

The quote is from page 56 in the hardcover.

Monty looked in that direction as he walked into the store--and froze.
Amber eyes stared at him. Lips lifted off the teeth in a silent snarl as the creature lying in front of a bookcase rose to its feet. The damn thing was big. Its shoulder would be even with his hip if they were standing side by side, and he was sure it outweighed him.

What book are you embarking on? A comfort read or something new? Please share in the comments.

  1. This is such a good series. Isn't it funny that such a violentish book is a comfort read right now?! Excellent selection.

    1. It is odd, isn't it? I think it's the relationships and the hope that keep bringing me back.

  9. I do love this book but I have only read it once. I think that the book that I have read the most is the first book in the Sookie Stackhouse series and I have probably read that one 6 or 7 times.

  12. I listened to this one a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. I got the 2nd book on Audible but haven't listened to it yet. I may need to move it up the list!

  13. It sounds like a story to get lost in. I am finishing the VERY long book, The Overstory by Richard Powers. I liked it until it just went on and on and on. I want it to be done.

  14. I love this series. I bugged my daughter to read it and she wouldn't until I bribed her and then.. she read it 28 times!

I am reading all new stuff right now. I did reread River Marked over the weekend as part of Deweys for the Read-along.
