Blurb from PR Firm:

Urban legend says that everyone has a double, or exact look-alike. Would you search for yours? And if you found them, would you risk your life for theirs?

When a chance encounter outside the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan results in mistaken identity, wedding planner Gia Russo is curious to find the person whose cell phone picture has been shown her—veterinarian Dr. Danielle Murano, her exact look-alike. A Facebook private message blossoms into a budding, long-distance friendship, and the two women agree to meet in New York and see the truth for their own eyes.

Shocked at the sight of one another, they quickly bond over drinks, childhood pictures and an uncanny feeling that they share more than just a visual resemblance. Together they decide to end the speculation and undergo DNA testing for siblingship. But when the tests confirm they’re identical twins, more questions are raised than answered.

And with good reason. The same mysterious forces that separated the sisters years ago are still at large, frantic to keep the two women apart. Their attempts to do so become more violent once it becomes clear that the two sisters have found each other. But when the danger escalates and the sisters fear for their lives, Gia turns to a former client of her wedding planning company, Marc Devereraux of Forensic Instincts, for help.

Despite being embroiled in another case, Forensic Instincts agrees to help Gia and Danielle discover who has been threatening them. And when Forensic Instincts discovers that this case is linked to the [Mafia, Organized Crime], they must dig up skeletons better left buried, and get at the frightening truth without destroying the sisters and the families they have grown to love.

Our Thoughts:

Why we read it ~

Bea: I've read some of the earlier stories in this series and enjoyed them. Add in the blurb and my interest was piqued.

Steph: I was experiencing Criminal Minds/NCIS withdrawal when this book came across for review. It seemed like it would help with the drought and I was correct.

I didn’t know that this was book 6 in a series when I accepted it but there is enough information given on each of the main characters to enjoy the book without reading the previous books.

Bea: Huh, now that you mention it, it did fill that NCIS/Criminal Minds niche even though the Forensic Instincts team is civilian and unaffiliated with any police or military organization.

The story ~

Steph: There are two cases occurring during the book. One is dealing with a young woman’s stalker and the other is dealing with identical twins who find each other completely by chance. As is the case in many books I read with two story lines, I found myself more interested in one than the other and then BAM, the two cases were tied together and I was totally hooked. I could not put the book down after that information.

Bea: As Steph mentioned, there were two story lines and the first was wrapped fairly quickly. I was unsure how it would tie into the second one. When they finally did converge, I was kicking myself for not seeing it sooner. That was only the first of several twists and turns. Kane me kept guessing and kept me engaged. I was hooked and didn't want to put down my Kindle. There was lots of tension and action, especially once the second story kicked in.

Steph: I really enjoyed the book. It was a little slow to get started because I was not all that interested in the first case but once they were tied together, it held my attention and I couldn't put it down. I was on the edge of my seat through the last half of the book and blurted out “OMG!” more than once. The cats were amused. The author does a great job of tying the two cases together and dropping a surprise or three along the way.

The Characters ~

Steph: I liked the characters and enjoyed their interactions with each other and their clients. I'm not 100% sure how I feel about the clairvoyant stuff but it did make for some good jokes. I usually prefer that only in my paranormal themes but it works okay here. There were a few times I raised my eyebrows at some of the not so legal investigation stuff  (Can we say breaking and entering?) but hey, it's fiction so I let it slide.

Bea: I really enjoyed the new characters whose cases the team took on. They were all likable, and I felt for them as they dealt with the shocks that just kept coming. I don't know if I could have been so calm and adaptable. As for the team, there had been a few changes since the last book I read. I like the new additions and how well the team works together. They get along, mostly, and they work smoothly together, anticipating each other and playing to each other's strengths. I liked spending time with them.

Our Wrap Up ~

Bea: Although I had missed the preceding two books, "A Face to Die For" worked fine and would even work as a stand-alone. There's enough back story to fill in the blanks and I'm more eager now to read the books I missed. "A Face to Die For" was a convoluted twisty story full of tension, intrigue, and drama. While it got a little over the top at times, it was exciting and engaging, and left me wanting to read more in the series.

Steph: Even though this is book 6 in the series, you can read it and not feel as though too much is left out with character back stories. I am sure it is much richer if you have read the first ones but you can definitely enjoy the book without the previous ones. I plan on going on a hunt for the first five books and read those also. I think I have a new author to follow.
