September Balancing the Books

Inspired by Fantasy Is More Fun and The Geeky Blogger's Book Blog, I decided to start tracking my book expenses this year. I'll do a wrap up post at the end of each month.

I've given myself $10 real money each month to spend on books, whether for myself, as gifts, or blog giveaways. "Real money" being cash from my bank account as opposed to gift cards and store credits. I am counting money spent to ship giveaways and Paperbackswap.com books. Books from my personal shelves, borrowed from the library or a friend, and books received for review do not count against my purchases.

BOOKS WON OR GIFTED

In September I spent $1.99 for 1 books (1 book I paid for in August but didn't receive until September) and a PBS credit for 1 book plus I got 5 books from the library, 13 for review, 1 freebie, 1 gifted, and 10 that I won. I also read 7 of my own books. I went over my cash goal for the month thanks to so many giveaways but I'm still on track for the year.

  1. This is impressive record keeping! I'm almost scared to see what my month would look like. You got some great books this past month. I love Jenn McKinlay and I like the Emily March series.

    1. Goodreads and Amazon help a lot with the record keeping. It's a lot of work but I have a much better idea of what I'm spending than I used to so I like it.

  2. I have been more strict on my budged the past month. I stayed under $10 in September. I have been using the library a ton more.

    1. The library is a huge help. Without it, I'd read far fewer books.

  3. I also rely on the library for print or e-books and Netgalley to save money.

When I buy nowadays I only buy used books (1.00 specials) or download e-books when discounted. I do treat myself to a few new to me e-books a month, but I don't keep track of the money. Rather I make myself not grab the pricey ones--I gravitate towards those under 5.00 and then it's all good.

    1. I buy a lot of used print books at my library's used book sales and from PaperbackSwap. For ebooks, NetGalley, Edelweiss, and Kindle Daily Deals are hugely helpful. I rarely spend over $5 for a book and usually less.

  4. I'm afraid to keep track of what I spend on books... even if I do get most of them from Goodwill or through various Kindle Daily Deals (I think I have signed up for 6 or 7 of those type of daily emails)
