There are only two books left after this one and I'm in mourning already. I love this series; it has humor, depth, originality, romance, and action. Add in the small town Newfoundland setting and delightful details and it's pretty near perfect. But I'm glad that Ball has a plan for the series and it won't go on and on endlessly, losing its way and dying.
"Mystery Night" is less action driven than previous books and much more character driven, though the whole series is heavily character driven. It takes place approximately nine months after the events of "Knight Shift" and focuses strongly on Jeremy and Rachel's relationship. Ball's characterization is deep and rich. We learn quite a bit more about Rachel's neighbor Mrs. Saunders and about Rachel's spirit mentor Dema. I was disappointed that we didn't see more of Mrs. Saunders in the story but I loved the exchanges between her and Rachel that we do get. Javier and Manny are back though Manny's appearance is brief; I hope he'll back in the next books. I loved how much Rachel has changed and matured. She's becoming more of an adult, which is something of a shock to her when she thinks about it.
Sometime in the last year, I'd become a grown up. It sort of snuck up on me...I'd never belonged to a place the way I belonged here on this wind-swept cliff of a port. I was growing stronger and more confident in my own abilities, both supernatural and mundane. I had a life here and I loved it. This was where I'd learned to accept myself for who I was, and if I left I was not convinced I'd be as strong anywhere else.
The bulk of the story takes place during a murder mystery weekend. It ties into a mini-mystery involving Mrs. Saunders which ties into Dema's background. Everything is related and comes together into a moving story that shows us new facets of Rachel, Jeremy, and Mrs. Saunders, and moves the overall story arc along. We get a few terrifying moments, some tender moments, and a huge serving of story and character development. "Mystery Night" is a strong installment in this series and lays the ground for the final two installments.

Well at least the series is going to finish strong. Nothing sucks more than following a long-standing series for it to end mediocre.
