Blurb from goodreads:

Small Town, Dark Heart…

A long way from anywhere, on a road going nowhere, lays a small, unremarkable town. It seems a peaceable, prosperous little place, on the surface at least.

Away from prying eyes however, in the shadows and the forgotten corners, there is a web being weaved through the lives of its inhabitants by the town’s urbane and mysterious Mayor. A man prepared to make a deal for your heart's desire and, maybe, for your very soul…

Welcome to Hawker’s Drift, a town where nothing is quite as it seems…

Steph's Thoughts:

The Burden of Souls starts off pretty slow with the funeral of Molly’s husband and it stays slow for the first part of the book. Then it picks up as things start happening. You can figure out pretty quick that something is up when the Mayor insists that everybody have a free whiskey every day. Seriously, who gives away free whiskey? Add that to the statement that nobody ever leaves town and you know something hinky is going on in this place.

This book is dark. REALLY DARK! Pitch black, demons lurking around the corner dark. There is some disturbing material in the story. Child abuse is not a subject I really care to read about. It was hard and almost made me put the book down. I can handle the drugs but that really put me out of sorts.

Overall, it’s not a bad book. Just hard to get through at times with some difficult subject matter. If you don’t mind weird books with a cliffhanger ending then this is for you.
