COYER Summer Vacation Reading Challenge

Because Reading Is Better Than Real Life and Fantasy Is More Fun are hosting COYER again. This time around COYER is a little different. To begin with, it runs most of the summer; then, instead of being only ebooks, it can be any book - digital, print, audio, doesn't matter- nor do they need to be freebies. There are also read-a-thons planned every few weeks. Full details are here - http://www.becausereading.com/coyers-summer-vacation-sign/

I'm not going to make a list of books as pretty much any book read during the time frame counts. As I read books I'll add them here and I'll also track them during my monthly challenge wrap ups. So, clear out your TBR shelf, whittle down that pile, and join in the summer fun.

Bea Reviews The Long Way Home by Jessica Scott

Format Read: eGalley
Source: the author in exchange for an honest review
Release Date: March 18, 2013
Buying Links: Amazon* | Book Depository* | Barnes & Noble | Smashwords

Blurb from goodreads:

My name is Jessica Scott. I am a soldier. I am a mother. I am a wife.

In 2009, Army second lieutenant Jessica Scott deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn. She thought deploying was the hardest thing she'd ever do.

She was wrong.

This is the story of a mother coming home from war and learning to be a mom again. This is the story of a lieutenant making the grade and becoming a company commander. This is the journey of a writer persevering through a hundred rejections. This is the story of a soldier learning to be a woman again. This is the story of a wife waiting for the end of a war.

This is the journey as it happened, without commentary.

This is her blog. There are many blogs from the Iraq war, but this one is hers.

COYER - Clean Out Your E-Reader March 2014

I participated in this challenge back in the fall and made some headway reading those free books and review books that had been piling up. Today starts the COYER challenge and I'm diving in again. Along with the Caffeinated Reader's TBR Pile Challenge also going on this month, I should whittle down that TBR pile. I also have a few current review books I'll be reading but most of my reading this month will be for these two challenges.

For the month of March Fantasy is More Fun & Because Reading is better than real life are hosting this challenge. The idea is to start cleaning out your free or nearly free E-reads! Not only will you get to those reads that have been sitting unread for too long, but 2 participants will have a chance to win prizes in the Review Posts Giveaway.

So, what books count? The book must have been FREE or NEARLY FREE: under $5, Kindle Deals, Netgalley, Edelweiss & author review requests only (NO blog tour reviews at this time). Anyone caught not using a free book, or using a book that is pirated will be removed from challenge.

Sign up here, then between now and March 8th create a post announcing that you’re participating and a list of books you hope to read during the challenge (this can change). If you don’t have a blog this can be done at the Goodreads group “Two Girls and A Challenge” Any participant that doesn’t have a starter post up by 11:59 PM EST March 8th (giving you procrastinators a little more time!) will be ineligible for the grand prize.

Start reading your books (March 1st) and reviewing them, on your blog, goodreads, Booklikes, etc. Put the link to your review (to the review URL, not your web address) on the review linky available March 1st, listing your blog name and the name of the book you reviewed. When you write your review, you MUST include the challenge logo and linky somewhere on the post so that we can all check out the reviews. (I just know I'll forget that part, lol.)

There will be challenges, giveaways, and a twitter party, see the details here.
The Levels:

Each person who participated will be able to grab an award ribbon at the end to put up on their blog announcing your accomplishment. Another level has been added to reflect the amazing reading prowess of some readers last time.

Lightly Clean – 1 to 4 eBooks
Spring Clean - 5 to 9 eBooks
Deep Clean - 10 to 14 eBooks
Xtreme Clean - 15 or more eBooks

Since I'm doing two challenges this month and have some review books I have to read, my starting goal is Lightly Clean. At the end of the month, I'll post my results in my monthly challenge wrap up post.

My very tentative reading list:

1) Gwynneth Ever After by Linda Poitevin
2) Against the Mark by Kat Martin
3) The Long Way Home by Jessica Scott
4) No Flowers Required by Cari Quinn

Review of Lucretia and the Kroons by Victor LaValle

Publisher: Spiegel & Grau
Format Read: eGalley
Source: from the publisher in exchange for an honest review
Release Date: July 23, 2012
Buying Links: Amazon* | OmniLit* | Barnes & Noble
* affiliate links; the blog receives a small commission for purchases made through these links.

Blurb from goodreads:

Lucretia’s best friend and upstairs neighbor Sunny—a sweet pitbull of a kid, even as she struggles with a mysterious illness—has gone missing. The only way to get her back is for Lucretia to climb the rickety fire escape of their Queens tenement and crawl through the window of apartment 6D, portal to a vast shadowland of missing kids ruled by a nightmarish family of mutants whose designs on the children are unknown. Her search for Sunny takes Lucretia through a dark fantasyland where she finds lush forests growing from concrete, pigeon-winged rodents, and haunted playgrounds. Her quest ultimately forces her to confront the most frightening specter of all: losing, forever, the thing you love the most.

Lucretia and the Kroons is a dazzlingly imaginative adventure story and a moving exploration of the power of friendship and the terror of loss. This all-new novella serves as the perfect companion piece to The Devil in Silver, a thrillingly suspenseful work of literary horror that continues the story of Lucretia.

Bea's Thoughts:

The story starts off slowly, laying the foundation. We meet Lucretia, Loochie, her family, and her ailing friend Sunny. Loochie is twelve and anxious to be older; she worries that she's not developing as quickly as other girls in her class and she's worried about Sunny's health while at the same time in denial about it. I was expecting a dark fantasy/horror story but what I got was a contemporary dark fantasy with hints of "Alice in Wonderland" set in an inner-city. It's both gritty and horrific. The Kroons sound like an urban myth but they are all too real.

"Lucretia and the Kroons" is a horror story, a love story, a story of friendship, loyalty, hope, and death. A mix of the expected and the unexpected, it's a dark story; some children might find the material difficult to deal with but many young teens and tweens will be able to relate to Loochie and her life. A plus for me was that both Loochie and Sunny are people of color, not white, and yet that wasn't the point of the story, it was just part of who they were. I appreciate stories where there's diversity but it's just part of the story and isn't the point.

Trigger warnings- children dying and cancer.

Discover what's hidden--a powerful, mythic race, an ancient Egyptian prophecy, and a love strong enough to shatter the boundaries of time.

Alexandra Larson isn't human...but she doesn't know that. As far as Lex is concerned, she's simply an ambitious and independent archaeology grad student with a knack for deciphering ancient languages, especially the various forms of Egyptian. When she's recruited to work on her dream excavation, her translating skills uncover the secret entrance to an underground Egyptian temple concealed within Djeser-Djeseru--the famous mortuary temple of Queen Hatchepsut. Lex is beyond thrilled by her discovery...as is the enigmatic and alluring excavation director, Marcus Bahur.

As the relationship between Lex and Marcus heats up, a series of shocking revelations leave the young archaeologist reeling. Once Lex discovers the truth of her ancient Egyptian roots--the truth of her more-than-human nature--the people she trusts most make one final, terrifying revelation: Lex is the central figure of a four-thousand-year-old prophecy. She is the only thing standing between the power to alter the very fabric of time and an evil megalomaniac...who also happens to be her father. As events set in motion over four millennia ago lead Lex and Marcus from Seattle to the heart of Egypt, the fate of mankind depends on one thing: the strength of Lex's love.

As she senses the need behind Gideon’s rough and unwelcoming exterior, Maddie acknowledges her own yearning for love and family.

Clean out your E-reader Challenge November 2013

Yep, I've signed up for another challenge. :D Apparently I'm a glutton for punishment. However, my Kindle is obese so maybe this well help whittle it down a bit. The challenge runs the entire month of November. The Clean Out Your E-reader Challenge is hosted by Fantasy is More Fun & Because Reading is better than real life.

The idea is to read some of those freebies that have been collecting dust on your e-reader, whether you legally downloaded them for free, received them for review, or purchased them for less than $5. Yep, ebooks you bought on sale count as long as they were less than $5. Books over that price or that were illegally downloaded don't count and you will be removed from the challenge.

There will be challenges and giveaways, maybe a Twitter chat. During the month-long challenge you can share your progress on Twitter using the hashtag #COYER.

Want to join? Go here and sign up; you can sign up through 11:9PM PST tonight.

These are the e-books I'm aiming to read this month. I'll track my success here as well as post a wrap up in my monthly challenge wrap up post.

2) Maddie's Choice by Joyce Zeller
