October's Balancing the Books

Inspired by Fantasy Is More Fun and The Geeky Blogger's Book Blog, I decided to start tracking my book expenses this year. I'll do a wrap up post at the end of each month.

I've given myself $10 real money each month to spend on books, whether for myself, as gifts, or blog giveaways. "Real money" being cash from my bank account as opposed to gift cards and store credits. I am counting money spent to ship giveaways and Paperbackswap.com books. Books from my personal shelves, borrowed from the library or a friend, and books received for review do not count against my purchases.

Only $14 left in cash for buying books, shipping prizes, or for paperbackswap. I have several giveaways planned for this month so those should eat that up. Now that I'm working full-time again, I may be able to up my cash budget a bit next year. I had a bunch of library books come in this week so those'll keep me busy the next few weeks. I'm going to try to use the library more next year, which should help the buying budget. I read 7 of my own books, 1 from the library, and 14 review books. Not a great month overall.

  1. I love using the library, because it really helps with my budget. But I also love using paperbackswap. I only spent $20 dollars this past month, which I give myself $30, so doing good ever since I became more strict on my budget.

    1. I like paperbackswap but the mailing costs add up, even using media mail. I definitely need to use the library more; it has a good selection of print and ebooks.

  3. Great idea! You did really well and hauled in a lot of books. I haven't been to any library sales, but I do choose second party sellers on Amazon for used books sometimes.

    1. I love going to library sales; the selection is eclectic, I can find older titles, and the prices are cheap. That said, I'm actually trying to cut back on the number of books I acquire. In that regard, October was okay but not as good as I wanted.
